Jughead's wheel landing with the stock 172 is a good picture of what A1Skinner and I were talking about in Tnathan's thread and question about wheel landing in gusty conditions. No gusts here on the gravel bar, and we have the wrong camera position to see that he is approaching at what appears to be a brisk walk, but the airspeed is obviously as slow as for three point just prior to when he levels the fuselage for the wheel landing.

Yes, this slow in gusty winds is a bit harder to control at the numbers. It is also harder to control well down the runway. We have to slow down sometime or really endanger our machine, especially tailwheel. I really don't understand why many pilots want to deal with the slower airspeed and the end of the runway coming up at the same time. Also slow on the approach end allows angling across, absolutely necessary in some crosswind conditions.

Wow! What a great video!

I want to comment more on the video and the 182 rather than the flying (The flying was fantastic).

The quality of the video was superb!

Great drone footage, music selection, narration, scene to scene timing, stable no shake footage and so on. Very well done!

A comment on the 182. For those out there that are lusting after a tailwheel airplane and think you must have one to do fun back country flying just look at what a 182 can do in the hands of a skilled pilot. MotoDave has been doing some incredible flying going to all sorts of cool places in this airplane and not only that, he is doing it on relatively small tires. I know, 180/185/Cub's/Husky's/big engine 170's may be able to do more but don't discount the 182, its a great airplane that costs less to buy and insure and is much easier to fly than others. I agree that some tailwheel airplanes have a huge cool factor in addition to their capabilities, but the 182 sure is a capable airplane, especially with some of the mods available. Just my 2 cents on 182's.

Great video all around MotoDave, thanks for posting.

Kurt

Awesome footage! Like G44 said, it’s impressive and enlightening/encouraging to see what you do with what aren’t exactly considered huge tires. I guess that’s a testament to the necessity of skill over equipment. Thanks for sharing.

Don’t mean to sidetrack this thread but you might have the coolest job......ever, as well as good taste in bikes! Im a big fan of the huskie/ktm line....been riding orange for awhile now.

He still does, in Costa Rico and Peru. In his earlier days he was a full up Professional Motocross Racer.
