Larry, What's the make and model of your laptop, I can look up the specs. Most of the newer laptops should be able to handle it no problem, it just might take a little while to render it.

Larry, I think you are on the lower side of performance, but it should work okay. The picture in picture and speed effects might bog it down for smooth operation though.

It's a Lenovo G560, Leni. I've jumped in and ordered the software, so we'll see how it does (n't) run for me...

Hoping to rig up a mount and get some 'footage' this weekend of the new skis. I might even be able to find some snow, somewhere.

You should be fine. Like I said before, it may take a little while to render, but it will work just fine for you. For extra storage, you can get a 1tb external to store all your vids and stuff on pretty damn cheap these days.

Here's my first attempts with my new HD170 (and my new skis).

the jelly effects is usually cause when the airframe/camera vibration syncs up with the scrolling shutter of the digital camera. i discovered this with my gopro's, and since discovered what the rubber clip is for. it stops the vibration. stop the vibration to the camera, and stop the jello.

Could you post some pics of your mount? It seems pretty solid. I haven't had the chance to get out and do attempt #2 and probably won't until next week. I'm anxious to get out and try it on the 182 and see how much vibration I will need to get rid of on it.

Those skis look like a blast!

Right now, I'm using the "handlebar" mount that came with the camera. On my plane the lift strut attachment to the wing has a short, ~1" length section of 1" diameter tubing extending from the fared lift strut. In the photos below you can see the camera right where the lift strut meets the wing.

Nice vids, thanks for sharing! I like the perspective out on the wing like that and also noticed there was no noticeable vibration. Looking forward to seeing more!

Cool! I Can't wait to get recurrent training behind me so I can get back to life and important things like testing my camera! Hopefully next week I'll be able to go out and try out a new set up.

I also found one of Ram Mounts suction cup mounts that I will have a few uses for from gpscity.com for $9. $11.50 after shipping. It came in the mail yesterday. Can't wait to play with it too!

The skis are from Airdale Sportplane and Supply. These are their new design and I am helping Brett test them.

So far what you see in the videos is the pathetic amount of snow we have so the testing has been limited. They seem to be working good with little effect on performance. I want to see how they go in deep snow, though.

Well, I finally made it out for another test flight, this time in the 182. I put the camera high on the strut and used a hose clamp to secure the mount. The results: not nearly as much jello effect...more of an annoying ticking at high power settings. Still nowhere near as smooth as I would like it though. I'll try to get some raw footage up in the next couple of days.

I removed the cushion that was between the disc and the camera. My next step is to remove the rubber padding between the hose clamp and the strut. The RAM mount comes with a neat sleeve for the hose clamp, but it isn't long enough for the size of clamp needed to go around the strut. Anyone know where you can get another one of those? Or have something else you have found that works well? Protecting the paint is the goal here.

Hose clamps can be bought cheap from the Home Depot aviation department. Give that mount a good crank, and then an extra crank for snugness. I use high grade sink rubberized mat to protect the paint.

Hey Matt,

I'm using a piece of a rubber maid type sink mat. It's kind of thick. I'm hoping that by going to something thinner that will eliminate some vibration. Kind of frustrating trying to track this stuff down but it will be worth it. I also cranked everything down as tight as I could get it. Going to try the suction mount inside the plane on Tuesday.

Video is about ready. Been a busy day with the family.

Ok, so here is my first attempt on a 182, using a hose clamp this time. There was definitely improvement, but still some vibration to work out. I want to do another flight using the Viole strap to see what kind of results I get with that. The next step is to scale down on the rubber under the hose clamp and see what that yeilds. I'm hoping that I keep trending in the right direction!

It's a little long, primarily because I wanted to see various stages of flight to see what was happening. The stabilization that I refer to is Magix's video stabilization that you can run...not sure if it made much of a difference.



I did another flight today with the Ram Mount suction mount. The prop distortion wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The next step is to get a ND filter and see how to Redneck it to the camera. Once I get that figured out, I think I'll be pretty happy with the inside shot based on how happy I was with it today.

Anyone here know where you can get a small mic that will fit the audio jack for the back of the HD170? I'm wondering if a small mic could be put in your headset to pick up audio like I've seen others do with other cameras.

I've been thinking of getting one of those small, pocket digital audio recorders to use with a remote small mic in the headset. (Like this) That way it wouldn't be necessary to run a wire all the way to the camera. Audio track(s) can be timed and added to the video during the editing process.

(I too was surprised by the lack of prop-boomerangs with my videos.)
