Im personally never to keen to put up mustering videos because one can find themselves getting in alot of strife over it! however every now and again you find the odd video people are happy to share, And i found a beauty tonight! this video might give some impression as to what a muster is like.

Dont you guys use bikes? Bikes have there ups and downs. They dont beed feeding or the vet, but you get alot more accidents as when your concentrating on cattle, you loose that set of eyes watching where your going that you get with a horse.

How many acres you on there skalywag?

Well, I use a dirtbike as my main transportation on the ranch, but for working cattle we just can't get very far off-road with any vehicles. The terrain is really rugged, littered with sharp volcanic boulders n cactus, and canyons every few hundred yards. Our place is roughly 19,000 acres. An R22 would be a dream...someday we'll get our supercub out of the shop, it's a game changer compared to my Cessna for workin round the ranch.

Man Luke, sounds like a great place you're on. One day I'll take a trip down to that neck of the woods.

yeah was just looking at the ranch website, defiantly horseback country for the cattle! how many head you able to run on that place?

1900 is a good size! defiantly a good place for the chopper but a little drifter like mine would work country like that nicely ;)

There is an outfit out of Utah that does livestock gathers with these:

I watched them from above one day and man it looks like a fun job. I talked to them a little and apparently they have a hard time finding the right pilots; guys that are good sticks can't read the animals and drive them too hard, guys that can read the animals aren't good enough pilots.

Re: Heli Mustering - one for Skalywag!

David, that'd be awesome I'd be happy to show you around our region, winter is the prime time flying.

Drifter, wow gotta look further into your type of plane, actually I have ever since I first heard you were mustering with it. Our country is real hard on horses too, little Spanish horses are what most in our terrain use. Right now we cut way back due to drought and only have bout 150 cow/calf pairs. In good years, 300 pairs is realistic. We have no fences to speak of so that limits us a lot, if we had tighter control over grazing we could run potentially a fair amount more, which is my long term goal. It takes a special cow to make the most of this country n we've been building our own breed for 6 years that are doing really well. Up just north of us in the grasslands they run more head per acre than we can, amazing cattle country when it rains, the flip side is we are much more drought hardy! We've got about 4,000 acres that are southern highland prairie like the grasslands up north n are just now getting water to it, which will be a great addition to our grazing plan.
