High Sierra Fly-in Oct 24-27 Also see pilot info thread

Just putting this out there for everyone.

http://www.backcountrypilot.org/community/events/viewevent/12-high-sierra-fly-in-2013

The 4th annual event will be larger than ever this year with endless fly out opportunities, a short field landing / take off contest (with prize $$ and trophy), a pumpkin drop contest, full catered BBQ on Saturday night, skydivers and of course a T-shirt! Come join us in the desert!
The fly-in will start for arrivals on Thursday the 24th and run through mid day Sunday the 27th with departures. Group Fly outs on Friday and Saturday. All types of aircraft can access the lake bed and many of our strips we visit. Landings vary in elevation from 4500' to just over 10,000'.
NOTAM's and exact location will be posted 1 week prior to start for optimum conditions. More than likely it will occur at the same dry lake bed we have taken over the past few years.

I have it on the calendar. At this point there's no reason why I can't make it. Yet. :)

Just my 2 cents for location suggestion.

Smith Creek Dry Lake, between Austin and Gabbs. Mainly for this:

The best hot springs in northern Nevada. And access to some great off airport playgrounds.

Seems like a great idea! I need to get out there. How far is the closest fuel? Having Carson and Minden close to the traditional spot is a bonus with a lot of places that many of us have flown into already. I just dont know that area well is all.

With the expansion of the event each year I am looking into getting a BLM rec permit for the fly-in this year so that we have all of our I's and T's crossed. Its a pretty simple process and given I have it on this forum along with the Cub and Skywagon forum as well we could see 100 planes this year. We had half that last year with short notice.

Kevin, you've been to Smith Creek haven't you? It's about 20 miles west of Austin. Pops keeps an eye on the hot springs.

In my POS Cessna (read that SLOW) nearest fuel is about 30 minutes away in Hawthorne (KHTH) Silver Springs (KSPZ) and Yerington (O43).

The lakebed is right off an old version of Hwy 50, now Nevada 722. It's the old X-15 landing site, and used by the land sailing guys. There's room for many hundreds of airplanes, and no one around for miles to be bothered by anything anyone does with their plane.

I like it. Sounds like it has more room than that lake bed you guys camped in last year. If you expect a lot of planes, given what happened at JC this year, a lot of room would be nice.

We're in! Hopefully with a newly reconstructed Skywagon!
If not, we will rent the 170 again!
Looking forward to seeing everyone again, and whatever Kevin comes up with to top last year!

Trust me Thea lake bed we have is perfect and really big! Plenty of room for everyone that we had at JC and then some! The thing with Austin is that it's further and doesn't have fuel nearby. Lots of places to stop @ 3SGS and easily go get gas..or breakfast @ minden!

So if you do the BLM permit what will be the protocol for human waste? You ordering plastic toilets? Or should we bring up the subject of pack it out?

100 plus people make a mess.

Re: 4th Annual High Sierra Fly-in Oct 24-27

Now I find myself between a rock and a hard spot.
I will be starting my last trip at the job in Saudi tomorrow so I won't have access to the Gulfstream. I'm not to sure it would work very well on a lake bed anyway.
On the other hand I will have plenty of time available, unless I find a new job. No doubt my wife would shoot me and bury me in the back yard if I buy an airplane before finding a job.
what to do, what to do.
