I am a grown up pilot!

Well, after almost 9000 hours and 25 years I got my ATP. I went to CT to Action Multi. Their program was pretty intensive, but I had studied their information sheets they sent, and did some simulator time (thanks Medallion foundation). They use Seneca 1s with standard VOR heads, no GPS, no HSI.

I thought the first flight would be kind of a "lets see how the Seneca flies", but no, straight under the foggles at 100 feet and first lost engine at 400. But I got through it, and then rode along as my buddy flew, same thing the next day, and then checkride the third.

The ride was 2.3 hours, two ILS, one VOR, one Localizer, and some holds, lots of engine outs, stalls, steep turns, and slow flight....all under the foggles. Ended up with a single engine, no flap, partial panel ILS to circle to land. Man was I ready for the victory beer.

I don't need an ATP, nor do think I ever will, but I did my written before the deadline last July and therefore got in with the old standards.

Now I am in Toronto for Flight Safety's Twin Otter training, I will be flying north of the arctic circle this year out of Deadhorse....brrrrrrr.

Re: I am a grown up pilot!

Well done Sir!

I remember when I did my ATP, I spend 30 minutes on a 1900 preflight in Scotts Bluff, NE, wind howling and 25 degrees. The examiner said that was a hell of a walk around. I told him, when you hand me a pink slip, I want to have a better story than I screwed up the preflight.

Re: I am a grown up pilot!

Congrats! You made me tired just describing it.

I once thought about getting my ATP, but SE ATPs are really about as useful as the proverbial tits on a boar. I can hear me now, in the usual bragging conversation,
"Yeah, I have my ATP."
"Oh, really, what do you fly?"
"Cessna 172."
"Oh."

Re: I am a grown up pilot!

Congrats Headoutaplane. Sounds like you enjoyed the trip.
Great outfit there, got my ME Commercial with them in 2008 and had a blast.

They do not kid about studying the stuff prior to training. N33300 was already an old but trusted bird.

If you've never flown out of Deadhorse, you'll find it a garden spot. But, the food is good at the hotel.

But, when you walk out the front door to head to your airplane after breakfast, you'll find these guys waiting to greet you! Just run faster than your FO.

You'll like the Twotter - and your Beaver will be happy that you're keeping things "in the family", too. :D
