Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Idaho to Alaska 2009/10

Hi all, The family moved up to Alaska for the year and my wife made a few collections of photos to share with family and I thought some folks here might enjoy. Had friends who had offered to bring a car up for us, but Nancy decided she wanted to do the AlCan. I made it up in time for the Airmens show and Valdez, then back to get the Citabria and bring it up on floats. Since then have had some nice trips with the family and look forward to more. Noticed I had linked last years trip on SC.org, but not here, so included that as well. Hope you are all having a nice summer. Sorry to have missed everyone at JC.

Great Pics Matt - I love the one of the 3 kids sacked out in the back of the plane. One of the kids being the plastic doll!

Love the pictures, my kids are about the same age and it's always an adventure when ever we go some where, especially in an airplane.

Denali

Had a couple of days in Denali National Park. The first day there was nice weather and did a flight up Kahiltna Glacier and through the pass between Denali and Foraker. Camped a couple days at Stampede airstrip with day trips to Kantishna and the Park entrance. Stopped by Talkeetna on the way home.
Hope you're not bored by the "family vacation" photos. The scenery around here is stunning and I am still in awe myself. It would probably be better to post a couple of the best photos, but I'm lazy and it's easier to just link the galleries Nancy puts together.

The Good Lord does not deduct those days from our alloted quota, spent fishing, flying or with our Grandchildren.......

Great pics! A lot of familiar country in there. Many of those pics in and around Valdez/Cordova are our prime heli ski areas. Cool to see so many planes at Hinchinbrook. We have a surf festival there each Sept. Anyhow, great work!

Is there a way past having to register and sign in to see the pics?

I think she only did the registration thing when making the 2009 trip gallery. Did you have the trouble with all of them?

Re: Idaho to Alaska 2009/10

Great pics! All I can say is a big fat juicy WOW! And I'll bet those places are 10 times more breath taking in person. For us Texas flat-landers, what did you feel the first time you saw those sights for yourself? Can you give us a little description? I'll probably never see that stuff in person even though my wife and I often discuss moving there.

Even if you never fly to AK (and every pilot should fly the trip at least once in their life) do yourselves a big favor and take the Alaska State Ferry up/down in the late Fall or early Spring. The weather's nice, the scenery to die for, and the boat's empty. It's like a private cruise. At a fraction of the cost.

Seward Penninsula Trip

http://www.kodakgallery.com/gallery/sha ... s-_-Sharee

Last week we headed for the Seward Penninsula. Stayed in the Rohn Cabin (check point for the Iditarod), soaked at the Serpentine Hot Springs, landed on a beach 40 miles from Russia and checked out the local scene in Nome. Kids enjoyed seeing herds of Musk Ox and Caribou and playing in any water they could find. I even got to learn more about judgement of beach landings - from experience!

I know when I was in Idaho, seeing everyone's photos were part of the inspiration to come to Alaska. Hopefully this does the same for someone else.

Re: Idaho to Alaska 2009/10

Hi Matt, You bring back memories of our '05 trip. Did you guys "see" Alf up on top of the Serpentine rocks??
Also, I see you need some 35 inch tires for those soft beach landings. Did all four of you get out in one trip from there?

Re: Idaho to Alaska 2009/10

Thanks for the nice comment, Scott.
John, we did not see ALF or any other alien life forms in the rocks. Maybe we didn't find the right kind of mushrooms? Leaving Serpentine I did a shuttle flight to Quartz Creek. Probably could have made it, but still like to keep the safety margin. When we came to a stop in the muck/sand we were 20 miles north of Cape Wales. I could move slowly, but couldn't accelerate. I actually did turn to Nancy and say something like "well now it really is an adventure". I had thought of shuttling out from there if needed, but after walking around to find where it was firm, we found solid sand just about 50 feet to the left. Just had to throw a bunch of driftwood out of the way. With the consideration of shuttling people and gear, Nancy voted for people first - those were Big grizzly tracks!
Fisherman, if it's any indication, I like looking back over the pics again and again. It really is incredible. Don't put it off, make it happen.
