Idaho to Alaska 2009/10

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

It is the same for me, Matt. Enjoying your photos! Thanks for sharing with us! Someday I'd like to make a trip up there myself. But, for now it not in the cards. I want to get plenty more hours and backcountry flying experience in before I attempt a flight to AK.

But, like I offered in another thread some time ago. If somebody has an empty co-pilots seat that's flying to or from AK and passing through southwest Idaho area and don't mind me going along for the ride, I'd for sure be up to that!! I'd even help pay for fuel and of course, pay for any airline ticket that I would need.

Matt,

The story and pictures of your travels are very well done, and have me wondering if there is time yet this summer for a trip to the Wrangell's. I spent the early years of my flying career in Alaska, and each time I go back, it's like I'm going home. But you have given us a close look some of the state I have flown over without stopping to explore on the ground. Thanks for stirring up the juices.

NORTH as far as we could go

Anchorage had over 28 days of continuous rain in July/August. The "gloomiest summer on record" so we decided to head North for some warmth and sun. We were enjoying it so much after the gloom in Anchorage we ended up going all the way to the top. Spent some time in Wiseman, Bettles and Manley Hot Springs before bringing the good weather back to Anchorage. All three of these places would be recommended travel stops for anyone. Didn't stop in Deadhorse as I hadn't heard anything positive for the casual stop over. Wanted to go to the airstrips on Barter Island or Point McIntyre on the Arctic coast, but the coastal fog didn't cooperate. When I was over Pt. McIntyre, the layer was thin, but too close to the ground and the strip looked pretty eroded from so many freeze/thaw cycles. Anyone been out there? There were other areas open from the fog, but the beaches all looked like hungry mud bogs ready to eat the plane. Much better landable sandbars on the Kuparuk River headed south to Anaktuvuk Pass.

Where Did Summer Go?

Put together a collection of some places we have done day trips to around the Anchorage area in the plane this summer. Threw in a couple of the kids and cool planes for good measure. Also my brother Tom came up for a few days and friend Troy and I cruised out toward the Alaska Penninsula and Katmai NP where we saw just a few more fish than bears.

Matt,

Terrific spread. Really looks like some well captured family memories.

Re: Where did summer go?

Skystrider, No significance, just the name given when taking the group of photos off the camera and lack of effort in writing a new caption when posting the pic to kodak gallery. Thanks for taking the time to look and comment. Everyone have a great weekend. Winter is approaching...
