Identify this tail ski please?

Can anyone tell me what I have here? No data plate. I’d like to install it on my A185F, McCauley 8” tailwheel. Copies of documentation anyone?

It looks similar to the one I have on my PA-16 Clipper. The first picture is how it looked when I got it, the second is after I spruced it up a bit. It fits great on my ABI 3200 tailwheel. I have no documentation for it either but I have always been curious who made it.

Re: Identify this tail ski please?

Looks like the tail skis Federal and maybe Fluidyne built way back. In Alaska at least, nobody worries much about documentation on tail skis. Might be hard to find. Wipaire now owns all the Fluidyne, and maybe some of the Federal stuff. Might give them a call.

Or, what I would do: Call Burl Rogers in Anchorage and buy one of his Magnum tail skis. They are FAR better than any other tail ski around. And, they come with documentation. You won’t regret it. Look up Burl’s Aircraft on Google.

One of the “handy” things that many tail skis do is install a very severe tailwheel shimmy. It has to do with design and fire/aft balance. Can be ugly.

Burl’s is the best. I’d hang that one on the wall.

Re: Identify this tail ski please?

I agree with MTV, the Burl’s ski works great.

It is not entirely immune to the shimmy problem. However, it can be avoided in large part by:
-Maintaining proper tw tire pressure.
-Doing wheel landings and setting the tail down at slow speed.
-During crosswind landings, being extra careful to set the tail down while tracking straight down the runway.

It could very easily be a "roll your own" I'd say

Answering an old post for future reference.
That looks like a Fluidyne CT3000 tail ski. Uses drawing 11R1002. Looks like it's approved for Cessna 170's, 180's, PA-20's, PA-18's, and under stc SA3-423 airplanes equipped with Scott 3200 or 3400 tailwheels and approved main ski installation. I've got one on my Stinson.
