Re: If you had a year, What would you do ?

What would I do? Same as I'm doing now, enjoying my friends, my airplane, my dog, the day, volunteering, skating, skiing. I've done a lot: 5 motorcycles, a sports car, now an airplane - lots of toys and people to accompany each toy. Was happily married for over 22 years (now widowed), had good jobs, house is paid off. Each day brings new and different things to enjoy - no planning necessary. I think I'd do more hiking in the Rockies and in Alaska, but that's all I'd add to what I'm already doing.

I don't want to die in my plane and add to the statistics. I'd rather die in bed asleep in the middle of the night.

Baloney is still baloney, no matter how thin you slice it.

Not really an answer....

....rather a comment. For the past 35 years(I am 63) my wife and I have lived out our dreams. Did it with the kids when we were young. Live our dreams as a couple now. God willing...we will recycle some of those youthful joys with our grandchildren in a few years. We stopped worrying and started doing. I/we live our life to the fullest extent possible while we still have good health, the means and enough energy to carry it out. We dream something. If it is within our means...we go and do it. We try to live so that should we find our life expectancy suddenly shortened...we would have few regrets.

When I was in college I rented a room, in a house trailer, from a 74 year old womann named Edith Rice. She was the first person I ever 'legally" took for an airplane ride...the day after I got my private licence. In her youth(back in the 1920's) she played piano in a house of prostitution in Terre Haute, Indiana. Over a bottle of scotch one night she told me...."looking back on my life I don't regret anything that I ever did." "I only regret the things that I did not do."

Edith's comments really came home to me last month. A good friend of mine, 2 months older than me, a retired USAirways captain.....died of pancreatic cancer. His death came swiftly....only 6 weeks after diagnosis. He was filled with reget as there were so many, many things that he was always going to do someday. He died having done very few of them. Broke my heart.

So live each day well....and when the end comes hopefully you can look back and smile. Oh yeah....if I knew the end was near.... like Rob.... I'd also try to be a nicer person. That is about it.

Living the Dream

Re: If you had a year, What would you do ?

Hey Winger;
I am a regular visitor at Starbuck. Minn. for the July 4th Heritage Days Celebration. I am the Maule always camped next to the t-hangar. Have I met you there?.. My last year would be to spend May to September At Starbuck with a lot of my friends there, then winter somewhere warmer. Sorry, don't have skis or floats for the Maule. Gene[/quote]

Hey Gene, We did the Starbuck thing many times, but didn't camp there.
Its only 15 minutes flight from home. One time we returned with the bike to watch the fireworks. Your so close at the hangers, the ashes fall on you.
There used to be more campers / visitors than the last few years.

These posts are a reminder of the real people
and great community aviation attracts.
Happy Day

Not sure if I regret anything at this point (It's been a good ride up to this point). That would be like reading half of a book and re-writing it.

I could sure use a few more lessons about grace, forgiveness, kindness, patience, humility and love. Thank the Lord that He's not done with me yet!

Matthew 6:34 comes to mind too.

I figure that - aside from blowing through all your $ - you should already be living that way. Not that I couldn't do a better job of it myself.

I started going there almost 30 years ago. Very good friends with many pilots and locals in the community. Know Marvin and Maryjo Brown especially well. I was the first to camp during Heritage Days and got the idea going to start the camping event. Started the following year with 4 airplanes and worked as high as 22 airplanes. Modern campers think they have to have a fancy camper instead of a tent and has taken a lot away from the rest.

Wasn't able to make it this past summer. The wheat and hay were early and had to be done that week. Will be there next summer for sure.

Something got me thinking about Roy Lopresti today. All the things he's done then he falls off a ladder doing home chores #-o
