Indopilot, did you make it into this Channel 4 show?

More of that "dramatic" airplane reality TV...haha. I dunno, this one looks pretty good.

I've been watching this show, and it's quite good! The scenery and footage of flying the Porter is amazing.

It somehow avoids the annoying format of American reality shows with their 15 previews of any given fabricated dramatic scene, while still telling the story. Who ever knows what's "real" and what's scripted but this show is better.

Did I already say incredible scenery?

I watched this all the way through - really well done show! I really liked watching the guy who was checking out the new runways that were freshly cut in the mountains. It looked like scenes from Air America :D Some serious risk management going on for these pilots, to say the least!!

It reminds me of another good book about flying in this area during and just after WWII called, "Lost In Shangri-La" by Mitchel Zuckof. It is the story of a C-47 crash full of military sightseers to the newly-discovered valley of "Shangri-La" on Papua, New Guinea. I found it in a used bookstore on a NYC layover and couldn't believe I had never heard the story before. It was national news in the US when it happened, with updates on the fate of the 3 survivors and newsreel footage. Really incredible that they eventually made it out, and especially HOW they made it out. Highly recommended!

You'll like it! It was a surprise find for me.

I keep a reading list of books in my phone that has a couple hundred books on it. As I read them, I delete them from the list. I get great ideas from the guys I fly with, and I read pretty much every genre, and both non-fiction and fiction. I'm a "like to hold a book to read" guy, so I've got a pretty extensive library at home. Some time in the next couple of years, we're going to turn our formal living room (the office) into a proper library, with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves in dark-stained wood and a peninsula desk for the computer. :D :D

Glad you all enjoyed the TV series! Shame they only made four episodes although there is supposed to be an international edit coming out with ten half hour long episodes, so keep an eye out on the cable/satellite networks. I was in the last couple of episodes :)

That book, Lost in Shangri-La, is a great read and for me it was fascinating to read about how things where and know how much Papua has changed in the 70 or so years since then.
