Just a thought, what kind of TW do you have? If you just have the skinny stock one, upgrading the the bigger fork/wider tire may take care of the issue and no field approval needed. Plus you get the benefit of more floatation back there.

Re: Installing ballast in the Cessna 170B

In my 172M with the extended baggage I carry about 60 lbs of survival gear on wilderness trips. On local trips to the gravel bars etc I carry a couple 5 us gallon camper style water bags back there. If I catch a load of fish etc. I just drain the water on the ground. I don't like adding weight but the plane handles much better and flys faster with the aft cg. Added bonus is you have good quality water for your scotch and water at camp.

I put 10 lbs of lead shot in the stinger on my 180. About the same as 50 in the extended baggage.

Wow, with a BBW already installed and battery aft, where's all the weight in the front? My 170 had MT prop, std tailwheel, battery on firewall, and I never considered it to be forward CG.

Or, are you trying to get the airplane close to the Aft CG limit while basically empty?

I'd stick to "disposable" weight, myself. It's cheap, and often stuff that you may need anyway.

Is there any way to fill the BBW with something (water, foam, ? ) heavier than air?

What is the current empty weight & CG?
Also, what is your W&B when loaded for your usual mission?
Intentionally moving the CG aft might make for better handling, empty,
but might also limit you when you want to load a bunch of gear for a camping trip.

Here's what the TCDS shows for a 170B:

Years ago we used to get forklift tires filled with foam to eliminate flat tires - they were seriously heavy.
