I thought I would document My IO470 Engine Build.
Trying to take pics to document my progress.
I think I have finally collected enough parts to get it done! :D

Re: IO470 Engine Build

Where did you send the cases and crank out to? How much? Inquiring minds want to know…

What cylinders will you use?

Looks fun-

Cool! What kind of machine is this gas burner going to drag through the ether?

From the pictures on his web site and gear in back of Crankshaft picture I'd say motor is going into Cessna 205 or maybe a 180 with fuel injection.

Took everything but the cylinders to Alaskan Aircraft Engines.

They don't do everything in house I found out.

Like the case and cam they sent out from there. Aircraft Specialties & Divco.

They did the crank, rods, rockers, inspected all the gears, push rods, thru bolts, starter drive and oil pump etc.

I opted for a Continental factory fuel injection kit.

Superior Millennium Cylinders. (I will probably catch flak for that, but I have had good luck with them in the past :D)

Superior Bearings & gaskets .

Yep you guessed it!

A new heart for the 205. :D

I bought the core at an auction so I could build it up to reduce down time.

Re: IO470 Engine Build

Crank assembly in place.

I wire tied a piece of dowel to the 3&5 rods to hold them in place then lifted the crankshaft by the #1 rod and the prop hub to place in crank half.

Image

Oil transfer collar in place.
Really tight tolerances on this piece!

Image

Timing Gears. The small crankshaft gear has to be heated to 300 degrees before being fitted to end of crankshaft and torquing bolts.
Big gear is for the cam and gear attached in front drives the fuel injection pump.

Image

It was checked before but it never hurts to make double sure before the halfs are mated!!!!!

I've always wondered why people do this. Why does anyone want to deal with rods flopping around. When I did my O 470 K, the case was put together and torqued with the rods installed later. When I topped my 470 A on the plane, I put new rod bearings and bushings in too.

On pictures of Crankshaft -I see a spot on main where plating is off -or is it a spot on camera lens ?

Yeah, people do them both ways.
I guess I do it like this mainly because that's what the manual says.
Probably easier to get the cotter pins in also.

Yeah, people do them both ways.

Hope you didn't take offense. I'm with Hotrod, keep the pic's coming. I've never dealt with an oil transfer collar yet, just the big, simple, front main that goes with a Phase 1 case.

No offense!
I am all for "if there's an easier way" !

I knew of both ways but I just prefer to put the rods on first.

I am also from the school of thought that if an "Old Dog" pays attention he might learn a new trick once in a while! :D

Old dog being me of course. :D

Re: IO470 Engine Build

Finally got a few more pics to upload!

I have talked to many mechanics over the years and have found a surprising percentage never check ring gap when installing an overhauled or new cylinder!

This is a very important step!

It has to be done at the right spot in the cylinder with the rings pushed in with the piston so they sit squarely in the bore.

All of the top 2 compression rings and the lower scraper ring were right on the money!
5 of the oil rings were a little tight!
A file fixes that quickly!
Image

I like to install my pistons part of the way into the cylinder. Just far enough to keep all but one ring compressed but leave the wrist pin hole out enough to install the wrist pin. Then Install wrist pin and slide piston in and over the scraper ring.

Image

Dont forget the O-ring at the bas of the cylinder!!!

It's starting to look like an engine! :D

Re: IO470 Engine Build

Awwesome! I will continue following this!

Do you know why the crank end-gear has to be heated so much before torquing? I assume its something to do with being at operational temperature with the correct torque, but it seems like it would be easier to calculate the adjusted torque value? Or perhaps is more about getting the fit with expansion?
