That came across as pretty snarky, Mike.
I have all the Avare sectionals loaded for the west coast and the NW mountain region area.
Also airport plates, approach plates, etc for the same parts of the country.
Seems like plenty of room left.

Re: Ipads

I have a Mini 4 with 128 GB with a MyGoFlight glass screen protector, mounted on the yoke of my P172D with a forpilotsonly.com iPro Navigator mount. Because the mount is a skeleton compared to others and has a sun shield, I've never had an overheat problem, nor is there any objectionable glare. I've been running the Mini 4 for about 1 1/2 years; previously I had a Mini, which I still have as a backup. I have all of the US ForeFlight charts on both. I also have ADS-B In coming from my Stratus 2, which is an amazing combination--ForeFlight and Stratus 2 gives somewhat delayed weather, but excellent information.

I have the cell version of the Mini 4, and it's activated with Verizon. That way I can update if necessary without WiFi, and I can use the Mini 4 like a small laptop.

Right now, there's some consternation whether Apple will drop the Mini line. I hope not--it's the ideal form factor for cockpits of the small size most of ours are.

Snarky? Have you loaded Fore Flight? My old iPhone had 16 G and I could barely get it to load three states, and very few of the other functions of FF.

Snarky? Your comment regarding photo libraries wasn’t “snarky”? The OP asked about iPads, not brand X tablets. I have zero experience with brand X, but I do use an iPad with ForeFlight. Which was the subject the OP asked about.

This is from the original post: "ipad pro or another unit ".
And no mention of Foreflight or any other specific app.
Like I said, my 16GB Samsung tablet works fine with Avare.
Checking the settings, it says I still have 6.5GB of storage available.
It fits easily on the panel, & is cheap to boot.
But, different strokes for different folks.

Re: Ipads

I also recommend getting as much memory as you can no matter what device you choose. Memory is kinda like horsepower... you can never have enough. Except memory is much cheaper. My iPad mini is only 16GB and it’s always out of memory. I only use it for Foreflight, I deleted everything else and it still doesn’t have the memory I want it to. I didn’t make the same mistake with my phone. My iPhone 7+ is 256GB and I never have to worry about running out of memory. I load everything available for Foreflight on it and it’s using 24.63GB. The next IPad I get will have the most memory I can get.

I absolutely agree. When I bought my original Mini, I didn't do that, as I didn't expect to put other apps on it--wrong! I found it to be so handy on trips that I started loading it up, and pretty soon I ran out of memory, more or less--what I mean is, although for example a device might have 16 GB supposedly, it really starts hanging up when its memory is using about 12-13 GB. So when I bought my latest iPhone SE and my Mini 4, I bought the most that was available. My SE has 64 GB, and I've used a little over 34. My Mini 4 has 128 GB; I've used a little more than 37. That's the most that was available when I bought them. They use the same processor, but the phone is noticeably slower using ForeFlight than the Mini 4, which really works quite fast.

I have the same ForeFlight on my original Mini, my backup. I took everything else off of it that I could, and yet it's still much pokier than my iPhone--because it's only a 16 GB version.

Live and learn. Or in this case, learn from others' mistakes.

As for which program to use, I can say that I'm 100% satisfied with ForeFlight. There are others, but FF outsells all of the others combined, including Garmin's. That says something about it, I think. The customer support is outstanding, and the product itself is incredibly useful and easy to use.

Re: Ipads

Agree with Cary......ForeFlight is pure magic. And they keep adding features regularly as well. Tons of features, many of which I don’t use, but I keep finding features that I like and add to my repertoire.

Great program, but it does suck up a lot of memory.

Re: Ipads

I agree with using only a few programs and having as much memory as possible on the mini.
My mini is a 3 64Gb with about 26Gb used and it works just fine.
A big plus for Foreflight. I have FlyQ also but the flight planning is so awkward as compared to FF the only thing I use it for is the georeferenced charts.

Re: Ipads

Thanks all! I really never ever considered the heat build up of the ipads or any device for that matter.
I'm already "apple" configured in my head so I want to stay there. My lifelong co-pilot (wife) has a Samsung device and I really don't care for it.
My panel is very basic and a previous owner has a center stack "hole" but notta in it. I think an ipad pro 10" will cover it nicely. Garmin 396 sits on the glare shield but may have to find a new home in the cock-pit.

If you have enough space you can use one of these mounts for an IPad mini and have it flush mounted in your center stack.

THis looks like itd be pretty slick for an early Cessna with the original t-shaped control column behind the panel.
Mount the com & txp up high (optional), and mount this iPad dock in the lower depth-limited part of the centerstack.
Or just use the dock, and leave the com & txp down below in the usual lower-panel location.

Re: Ipads

Sounds like I'll be OK with my wife's old iPad Mini 2 with 64 GB, with most other apps deleted. That's better than buying a new one. Just have to figure out where the best place is to put it on the jigsaw puzzle panel.

Related: I assume I can connect a GDL 39 to the iPad (no GPS in my Mini2) by bluetooth and get ADSB-in and also Garmin Pilot with at least the standard features?

This is what I did with my old 170. I used the same mount horizontally.

Rob, what is holding your iPhone on your panel?

Velcro  I didn’t want to do anything too permanent since phones change pretty often.
In my 180 I have a blank piece of aluminum covering an unused instrument hole. I mounted a ram mount for my iPhone to it. It works pretty well and was cheap.

That may be my answer. I've got the same style blank in the Sedan.

Sitting in my hotel room today I've constructed a precision partial panel with cardboard hotel literature, a couple coffee cups and a tissue box and it looks like an Ipad Mini 4 would fit quite nicely in that space, although slightly covering the lovely Sedan badge.

Using a flypad mount. iPad Pro 9.7” with 256 gigs and the cellular option for the built in GPS if the Stratus 2 fails.

Re: Ipads

Here is an iPad mini, in a 1962 C-180E. With it angled towards the pilot, and a glare protector on the screen; it works great. The physical size is perfect.

FYI: That is a Garmin GDL-39/3D mounted on the flap tunnel. It is hard wired to power, external antenna, and the Garmin Aera by the pilot’s knee. It connects to the iPad via Bluetooth, using the Garmin Pilot app.

Very happy with this combo.
