Javelin Tank Install

It's always amusing to see a thread about a Javelin tank pop up... Usually its from a guy who just bought, or is planning on buying a C170.

In the end, they are heavy, rob valuable storage space, and are not a particularly good idea. That said, they do have their place.

In that vein, I thought I'd share the orig install docs. ( I had to split the PDF into two parts as the full PDF was too big)

Re: Javelin Tank Install

My old IA mechanic friend installed one in his 55 180. He really didn't use it much so took it out. I wouldn't want to do it because of the hole in the side for the gas cap.

I have a tank, it was on my original "to do" list but now it's slated to be a planter box.

Re: Javelin Tank Install

I agree with Greg.....a uniquely bad idea in my opinion. I had a chance to purchase one for my 170. Thought better of it and installed Flint tip tanks....would do so again if I needed more gas.

Griggs Aircraft (O&N) baggage aux fuel install

One of my upgrades last winter was the installation of the Griggs Aircraft aux Fuel tank. Originally I wanted to install Flint internals but he had no stock and no timeframe for availability, (Covid mania). I regularly make trips from s.e. Ak. west along the coast and north thru Canada. Up to Tok we don’t stop in Canada so the peace of mind with having plenty of fuel is really nice. The folks at Griggs were great to deal with and the kit quality is top notch. Yes it takes up space but I operate the airplane as a two place so w&b wise no problems and it sure beats jugs in the back. About 25 hrs install so much faster than flints and could be removed in about 1.5 with a reinstall of 2.5 not counting paperwork. Of course one upgrade begets another so comfy new seats are required for the increased range, and since long hours can be tedious an autopilot comes into play. First world problems, at least for my lifetime.

Re: Javelin Tank Install

That Griggs system looks real clean. Those back tanks are fine on wheels and required if you have the 180HP conversion. On floats thats the last place you want more fuel. We put the Flints on a 172 with the 180 conversion on floats and while it worked well and kept the weight ahead it was yikes a bit (lot) scary when turning in rough water with the typical Edo 2000 floats. Had a serious pendulum effect when the tanks were full.

Its for exactly that reason that when required I put a 18 gallon TurtlePac carry in one of the float lockers with a 12 volt transfer pump.

I just did the Avcon 0-360 A1D STC on my 170B and it doesn't identify any requirement for a "aux" tank to be installed. Additional aux fuel might be useful but not "required".
