KB: Guide to aircraft ownership

Many of the knowledge base articles are stubs that I began to establish a direction, but never finished.

Today someone commented on this one, on ownership: https://backcountrypilot.org/knowledge- ... -ownership

The point of the knowledge base is to have some important information distilled into a single spot on the site, ideally a culmination of the information and experience shared throughout the discussion forums, so that you guys don't have to search and filter through the conversations.

I can't do it alone, nor would a knowledge base written solely by me be of much use.

I'm seeking some helping hands from those here who have the experience of owning backcountry and bush planes, or excel at curating information from a forum. If you want to divvy it up, that's cool too.

Here are some suggested high level sections:

  1. Which aircraft is right for me?
  2. Defining your mission
  3. Planning for future upgrade
  4. Buy and selling procedures
  5. Due diligence in the buy process
  6. Pre-purchase inspections
  7. Certified vs experimental
  8. Convincing your spouse
  9. Financing
  10. Dealing with the weight of a bad decision
  11. I guess I never realized they were covered in fabric
  12. The shame of settling for a trike
  13. The IA's bill is way higher than I expected
  14. My credit card is maxed out
  15. I thought aluminum didn't rust
  16. I can't fly because my airplane is down and I can't afford to fix it and all social media makes me want to eat my 12 gauge
  17. Reasons to continue renting
  18. Insurance

Re: KB: Guide to aircraft ownership

I think just reading the 18 subject headings will allow most people to decide if they want to own an airplane or not...

With the progression of topics, you forgot chapter 19: Which sailboat is right for me.

Throw this into the soup: https://www.faa.gov/regulations_policie ... 83-19A.pdf

Discusses aircraft ownership from the FAA's perspective.

Re: KB: Guide to aircraft ownership

This looks like a great topic around which to consolidate some information. I would be interested in contributing on the true cost of ownership, drawing from my experience owning and operating two airplanes that sit on different points of the cost spectrum. If anybody wants to collaborate on that sub-topic give me a shout.

Number 12 hit hard. It was such a good deal though!! $15k off of a brand new plane because the guy unfortunately passed away right after he bought it. I'll get my money back out of it. But still, it stings.

Even though a trike is better for me I must get a tail dragger since my male genitals are inferior.

Biggest ass graphic I've see today.

Thanks for reminding me to index Felix's great article about costs.

Oh, come on! Shirley, it must the biggest ass-graphic you have seen all week!?

And another bump for a great article from Felix, specifically here:

I just happened to be with him when that Cub photo was taken. He is kind of a big deal around these parts, you know?
