If I remember correctly from the book "Glacier Pilot" Bob Reeve, the aviation pioneer from Valdez, used to land on the mudd flats all the time. However, he used skis not bush wheels. I'm not sure I would try that either.

Interesting thought, Marty. Landing on mud with skis....
My thought would be that with a low power aircraft like a J-3, I would want plenty of room, and a skim of water standing on a usable part of the take off area for acceleration to flying speed. Seems to me water would be significantly slicker than most mud.
Just thinking (or trying) out loud.....
