Late season camping

It appears I'm going to switch jobs (old employer has said that they are going to stop paying me, so I'm taking the hint), so I'll have a couple weeks in early Oct to do some flying.

I'm in Chicago at the moment. So the rockies are 6-7 hours away. We aren't afraid of chilly weather, but would want to be someplace that allows campfires in that case. Someplace with a bathable hot spring would be super swank. 3-5 destinations over the course of a couple weeks would probably be about right.

But no reason it has to be the big rocks. Going south, to the Appalachians or even up to Maine or New Hampshire would all be interesting options also, I'm just *totally* unfamiliar with back country flying opportunities in those areas.

Who has suggestions?

Re: Late season camping

There will be a bunch of lunatics camping out in Nevada in early October.

And there are hot springs reasonably near by.

Just saying.

Re: Late season camping

Seems like CO - UT - NV- CA - AZ would make for one heck of an air camping trip over the course of a few weeks.

If you want CO suggestions, let me know. Plenty here to keep you busy for a few weeks as well.

Add to that, the timing is just about perfect for the fall color season in much of the intermountain west.
The high country is cooling off fast but the lower elevations are just about perfect. Cool dry calm days.
This is by far the best time to be flying in this area.

Comfortable camping doesn't start for us Texans until October. It's too darn hot during the summer.

Australia is one of the few countries in the world that I'd really like to visit.
