Lone Star Fly-Out

The Lone Star crew did a fly-out over the weekend and Russell put together a video. Includes David's swank new M6 and Chuck's experimental Maule.

Re: Lone Star Fly-Out

Looks like it was a ton of fun. The gusting cross wind at the first airport looked like a sphincter squeezer, but the rest of the stops looked benign. Great video of fantastic planes doing what they do best.

RW

Did you use the same "Type" of camera for all the footage? What is your software?

This video was compiled, edited, and produced by Russell461 on MaulePilots.Org

As a Maule enthusiast, I enjoy his videos immensely.

As MauMau mentioned I didn't make that particular video, but Russell and I are friends so I know the answers. :-)

He uses gopros for almost everything, but also has an older digital video camera. This footage looks like it might have been a collection of raw footage from a few cameras though, as we did with the first fly-in in Llano.

He uses iMovie to edit his movies. I think you'll find that iMovie, or its equivalent on windows, will be plenty powerful enough to do your first few movies. The software is much less important than planning and creativity on the part of the film maker. :-)

Yes, to see what others do not and to paint a canvas in service of a story.

The latter is the part I think most people struggle with. I'm a complete novice at this stuff, but I've been studying and learning what *I* like in a video. The Ohio guy (patrol guy here, I think) does a *fantastic* job with his videos. He manages to take a bunch of random footage through the day and put together a compelling narrative. I take a different approach, a more documentary style approach, and perhaps my consistency suffers as a result (or perhaps I just suck ;-)). Of the 2 or 3 I thought worth posting, this is my favorite:

.

Anyway, have a blast with your action cams. But if you want to learn from my mistakes I think the biggest one I made (and still make) is to not thing about the story beforehand and during the event. For the kind of stuff we do, you don't easily get to go back and shoot the thing you wish you had or start the camera at the lunch table to get the story that unfolded. The best you can do after the fact is to interview people (video or audio), ask them to talk about the day and then use that footage along with the shots from the event.

Shoot a lot (particularly of conventional camera footage, the best videos seems to be about 10-20% action cam and the rest from conventional cameras), be willing to throw a lot away and give yourself option in post.

Re: Lone Star Fly-Out

Methinks RW2 doth protest too much. Despite your proclamation of being a complete novice the video you produced is first rate and was a joy to watch. The cooperation of the weather gods may not have been ideal for flying and camping, but the nasty weather did produce some remarkable footage (is it OK to say footage when the clip is all digital?). I enjoyed it immensely. I'll have to take some beer with me to the next flyin I attend to be sure I ground myself on the flight demonstration day - that was my big take away...

Damn it. It was until you pointed that out. Now it's going to bother me forever.

Yeah, speaking of protesting too much, Jerry is a great guy and a top notch pilot. He's a retired jet jock IIRC. In any case, that line cracked me up also and was definitely something I wanted to get into the final cut.

Getting back to the subject of 'tips for better movies'. I interviewed 5-6 people and had a total of nearly an hour of audio that got cut down to the 5-6 minutes used in that video. That ratio seems about right. I even had to make the hard decision to not include anything from my interview with Brent Maule because the quality just wasn't usable. (tip #4: do the interview you're most excited about under the safest conditions possible, not out in the open on a windy day :-( )

Re: Lone Star Fly-Out

I really enjoyed rw2's Llano video as did everyone.

For those that could not attend, we get to live vicariously through their lense.

Thank you for taking the time and effort to put these pieces together!

Can I come next year to your Llano Fly In if I don't Fly a Maule?

Re: Lone Star Fly-Out

Nice video of the Llano fly-in.

Skalywag and I were fortunate enough to be at Llano on Saturday and enjoyed watching the competition and checking out the planes.

The experimental Maule caught our attention but quite frankly we couldn't really figure it out and weren't very impressed.....until on one landing when he reversed the prop....that was very cool and I want one on the front of my 185.

Not really knowing much about Maule's I could only judge them by their tire size. But apparently they are faster then I thought cause their N numbers were all blurred.

A particular Maule caught my eye, a white one parked right in the middle of the rest.

Had a very familiar shape to it. Anyone here drive this one?

Absolutely. I think last year we limited the raffle to Maule's only, but otherwise everyone is welcome.

Re: Lone Star Fly-Out

Excellent

I'll try to make it .....Llano Larry is a Great Guy. Joey the Ranger has a 205 that looks just like my 206. He's in the Ranger Hall of Fame. That is a nice airport .

Hope to see you next year
