Great board- Thanks for maintaining it!

Wheel-replacement skis really are sorta free-heel, if you think about it... (I just hope I never drop a knee!)

I remember seeing a guy landing on top of a mountain in Turnagain Pass, dropping off about 3-4 kids on sleds, and then flying back down to the bottom to pick them up and do it all over again. I thought it was the neatest thing ! I was snowmachining at the time, and didnt know what kind of plane it was.

I dont think I have enough hair on my you-know-what to try something like that anytime soon, but the fact that I saw someone else do it is pretty cool. Going from memory, the top of the ridge where he was landing was a pretty great spot to land.

Hasta ~

Any day you're flying your skiplane, wearing your avalanche beacon, pretty much has to be a great day, in my experience. Sounds like you're in Colorado, which I don't know much about (sorry), but I can emphatically say that it's worth chasing the dream.

I have always flown into lakes beneath terrain, and skinned for my turns. Sometimes I have made multiple trips to bring in friends, and sometimes rendezvoused with friends on snowmachines. (The second option is a great way to get a departure runway packed.

Have a great winter! :D

Cheers Denali Pilot! This is what I was looking for. Some practical solutions and tips on HOW TO do this. I think I have an action plan that involves getting my sorry ass in shape for some touring skis.

I really appreciate everyone's input. I will post my successful mission pictures.

...remember, life is uncertain, eat desert first!
... and, those that pound their guns into plows, will plow for those who don't.

I land off airport all the time in in California, have over 20 different off airport locations I've landed in Nevada and Arizona... So it is possible in the lower 48 to do off airport landings legally... Hell I know if five off airport locations close to Vegas... As for the rest of the country, that might be a different story, but here in the southwest, it isn't a problem...

And, the Idaho backcountry is called civilization, in my book. Criminy, I'd never think of landing on AIRPORTS occupied by five airplanes, let alone fifty, as happens at some of the Idaho "backcountry" airstrips, and have the gall to call it "backcountry aviation".

If you REALLY want to get away from the crowds, try OFF AIRPORT flying, not "backcountry" flying, whatever that is--4000 foot long airstrips, complete with sprinkler systems.

Oh, but that's not approved in most of the lower 48 either. Duh.

Not to be argumentative (no, really 8) ) but if you are talking about "locations" then I wonder if they are really "off-airport." Strips don't count.

I have been hesitent to post any specifics about my off airport activities, but I can assure you that there is no "strip" involved.

I am glad to hear other guys having some fun. It has been my experience that there are no people for MANY miles when I land in these places, and when I do run across someone, they are back counrty folk that are thrilled to have a story to add to their adventure.

A winning attitude conquors all!

lakeshores, desert, sand & rock washes and table tops aren't what we call paved roads, nor is some remote patch of dirt in Baja. I've landed on some mining roads in Nevada that are nicer than some of the paved runways and don't consider them off airport landing even though you could consider it as such... I love the southwest, because we have mountains, desert, lakes and the grand canyon, plus Baja Mexico to keep us busy...

Granted it's not Alaska, but it does offer a diverse type of terrain, and it's not uncommon for us to go wakeboarding in the morning and snow skiing in the afternoon...
