Hello all. Anyone know of issues with the IO-360 engines in the older Maules?
Thanks!

I know one guy that had one and he just loved it. Flew it from Nevada to Alaska and back. He is a pretty big guy it it worked great for him. There is a guy on here that i fly with that has an M4 with IO 360. He loves it.

Get a good engine monitor, they’ll eat cylinders of the temps don’t stay in line. High compression and the Maule cowlings aren’t exactly engineered to be the best cooling.

Maybe some useful info here: https://backcountrypilot.org/forum/school-me-on-the-continental-io-360-14949

I put an IO360-D, which is one of the models used on the Maule, on my Bearhawk. I am loving it. Easy on fuel, great power, smooth. From the looking at Maules that I did the coveted prop is the McCauley C203 in 82”.

There used to be a few Maule -210 guys around here but only one or two of them come around anymore.

I will call Butch and tell him to chime in. He has had an M4- 210 for a long time.

ok just got back from walking the dog... Tim... saw your message...have had 10Mike many years.. flown all over So cal, Arizona, Nevada Utah, Idaho and Montana.... never have had a problem with the IO 360.. SHakes like a Harley while Idling and taxiing, smooths out beautifully on takeoff, and cruise...the overheating cylindars is new to me..i haven't experienced that at all..... I Lean to taxi , and run right at peak.. have the engine monitor which gives me temps as well as oil temp... been running 29 11 10's for years... damn thing will go anywhere although not fast... 120 MPH is about it with the tires... used to get 130-135 with 800's but landing at rough strips is well worth the speed loss...anyway it's a Jeep not a ferrari..as to the cowling .. i had the upper cowling reinforced as it was sort of concave when i bought it from a guy in MInnesota years ago... gets off usually under 300 feet and climbs very well...when i go to Idaho i load it floor to ceiling in back with camping gear.. any questions just ask... hope i covered everything... oh and the IO360 was used extensively in the Swift for years and a derated version was put in the Hawk XP at 195 HP...

I have camped with Butch. I fly a 1956 182. He carries as much stuff as I do. Well almost. I am a bit faster. An engine monitor is a great plus

Pop over to Maulepilots.org forum and ask the same question. I know iceman is on that forum as well.
