Re: Mid-Air Collision Over Landmark

(Slight drift but still relevant)

When working on the radio in a congested uncontrolled airport, I was told, by an old salt of an instructor, to keep transmissions as short as possible. On way to do this while being more accurate is to not bother with the N number after your initial call.

Instead of saying "Piper 32779, turning 1/2 mile final, runway 7, at grassy strip"

I'd say, "white Cherokee, short final 7, grassy strip"

When scanning the sky I can find a white Cherokee quicker than some N number.

Just my opinion.

Re: Mid-Air Collision Over Landmark

Agreed none of this will stop all midairs, but if it prevents 1/yr. I would suggest it is a habit worth promoting.

Also agreed on the short concise transmissions.

But my main point is to give these reports other places than just at the airport you are intending to land. ie. you are departing to the south from JC, maybe going by Landmark and headed for Cascade. I like to call out around 5 miles out. Don't care for calling the N number as no one can see it anyways, but rather type/color of plane, like silver Cessna, 5 north of Landmark, southbound. if anyone responds I will say altitude, but could also do that during the initial transmission.

I still remember my first trip to Idaho back in 1986 and the different lingo on the the radio. Some went something like this. Out of the "B" for 10.5 going to McCall. I don't think things were as busy back then.

I was up there once and a lot of I am sure local pilots were giving position reports like "this is November Whisky Tango Fox Trot over cat hair ball creek at 8500" If you are not flying a lot up there you have no idea where that is. I asked and some dildo told me to stay away unless I was familiar with the area.

At one point, Galen was going to produce an Idaho chart, like he did for Utah, that had all the common reporting points used by local/charter pilots. I thought this was a good idea to enhance situational awareness and wish it would have been put out. I used to know some of them from flying with the Forest Service, but have long forgot them.

I feel for you guys getting together at these beautiful places. I was able to avoid traffic by staying low. I think the best you can do is to get real comfortable with the flying conditions, thus allowing mostly looking. High wing airplanes are hard to see out of. It helps to jink around a bit to see blind spots.

Found Landmark on GoogleEarth. Anybody got a location for the two planes in relation to the airstrip?

Back when cockpits DID NOT look like this, ya had to pay real close attention to what was outside the airplane so you didn't get lost. There was no reason to be head's down inside.

Nowdays... Different story I guess.

I still think this is #1, but I see no problem with trying to help each others situational awareness with lights and position reports.

And doing a little preflight diligence to familiarize yourself with what you will be flying over or around(airports/freq's, rivers, mtns, etc)
Have a beer, talk about it with your buddies, make it fun, but have an idea what you are doin and what is goin on . Just a thought

Those aren't the ones that scare me.....the ones that spook me are the guys with a half dozen portable "devices" stuck up on top of their instrument panel.....blocking their already restricted visibility.

I know one guy, who is short in stature to start, owns a Skywagon (hard to see out of anyway, and worse if you're short) and ON TOP of his glare shield on one side he has a full size IPad, and on the other side he has a Garmin 796. You can't convince me that he can see diddly squat out of that airplane......

Next time you're at a fly in, look in the windshields of airplanes......it'll spook you what some folks put in front of their faces.

Re: Mid-Air Collision Over Landmark

As far as I know, the name of the pilot has not been released yet - still waiting for notification of next of kin. But it does appear to be a plane from Fort Collins, CO. Some of you will remember this plane from the Marble Fly-In a couple of years ago.

Condolences to family and friends... sad to hear....

Wow...

That is a good landing in any aircraft, let alone a Citabria with a massively bent wing, and at that altitude... and the plane is still on the landing gear!!

I take my hat off to the lady at the controls of that aircaft! =D>

I found that spot on google earth. If she landed it that direction its only about 100feet from the creek to where the plane sits. very good job getting it down in one piece.

Yep. Having thousands of hours flying in the back country helps when the fit hits the shan.

The C180 pictured in this article that she refers to as "charles" is the one I get to fly (see my avatar)! It was purchased from her several years back. She's no stranger to the backcountry and from the pictures made an amazing recovery and emergency landing. It's really sad that there was a fatality but I'm glad she's safe. Condolences to all involved.

No puzzles, N44 37.02 W115 31.42. 1.23nm from the south end of Landmark strip, 500 yards from NF-579. Pretty good hike through the bush. Impressive that it's on its feet when you look at the location. I wonder how much of the damage you see was from the landing.

Re: Mid-Air Collision Over Landmark

The pilot's name was Mike Bond, based out of KFNL. I hope and wish for comfort for his family and friends. Rest in peace.
