Whamo! It most always happens to women. Women are more likely to get back in their car during the refueling and check their phone. Some thought that cell phones add into the mix. Still its like 10 a year out of millions of fill ups.

Wow! At least she stayed calm and didn't completely freak out like most probably would.
Mighta been like the duck--calm on the surface and paddling like hell under water. Certainly she didn't act panicked.

July 4, 2013 eatonville, washington two aircraft and a 1957 Chevy burned to the ground including the hanger. The owner was filling his super cub, in was not grounded and he escaped the flames. It is really necessary to ground the aircraft when filling it with gas cans.

I chimed in at times. 8)

There are many things in life that are remote possibilities, and our empirical data and personal experience can both treat us well or screw us over... The static discharge thing is real, and though it might not be common, just like flying through some wispy treetops after our eyes fooled us, the outcome can be really bad if it goes any way other than what you expected. How much extra work is it to bond?

I'm not a boy scout, I've done most of my fueling (in scenarios other than an aircraft at the pump) without paying attention to bonding, but I can tell you for damn sure, after spending nearly 6 figures and 4-5 years of my life building an airplane, I will behave like a boy scout when fueling.

Re: Mogas users , how do you fuel your plane?

I checked into what it would take to upgrade my current CDL license to legally carry my 300 gallon tank in the back of my crane. The only reason I've done it twice in the past was that I was working near the fueller that sells clear gas, so i didn't have to make a special trip (50 miles one way).About $100.00 and taking a test, no real big deal but in the future I will stick to transporting the big tank in the back of the flatbed, not the crane. I'll keep it simple, I only fill it 2 or 3 times a year anyway. To keep it even simpler, and to avoid wasting the time of any law enforcement personal I will cover it with a tarp while on the highway.
