Re: Monache Meadows and other Sierra Airstrips

Because this thread popped up again, I thought you all might like an update. The RAF is currently in conversation with the Forest Supervisor for the Inyo National Forest about these strips. The only one on the table at this time is Monache meadow. As you would expect things are moving slow in tipical buracratic form, but moving. :D News to come when news happens.

Monache specifics: There are two strips there. If you have an old topo the one on the northwest is the USFS strip and has not been used for years. Having been there in the last few days it is over grown badly and NOT landable. :( As for the other strip on the northeast it is defiantly on PRIVET property and permission is required. :( It looks like a road from GOOGLE map and it is landable.

That's good news Rick, even if it's slow progress at least it is progress! =D>

These strips are in, or should I say were in my back yard. Is there anything that can be done to reinstate them? I would love to help. A sad as it sounds I think the closure of these strips helped make the RAF the force that it is today, it showed others what could happen to their back country air strips as it did ours.

we ARE talking about Kalifornia here aren't we??? ](*,) :-({|= But wait till the tree hugger organizations find out about any attempt to open an old closed airstrip.... just think of all the snails, ants and field mice that would be endangered by landing aircraft...

My dad had several friends that were packed into Tunnel Meadows for hunting and fishing by Bob White's Flying service back in the day. They had a half dozen old Ice Boxes scattered arround and they would fly in Ice to keep stuff cold in the summer.

I did a FOIA on Templeton, Tunnel and Monache airstrips; I specifically requested any information on their closures. As far as I can tell Monache USFS air strip was never closed, if any one has any other information on this strip please contact me. I see no reason keeping the USFS from allowing us to repair the field but we must get permission first.

I know this is an old thread but has anyone been into monache lately? Im guessing the nicer looking strip when you over fly it is the private strip??
