Re: Mountain flying and gravel bar.

I love it.

Thank God for our wonderful weather/early Spring this year.

Your video looks like a Washington State promotional show!

BTW I like the rudder turn on takeoff.

My experience with gravel river bars like that is damage to the underside of my horizontal stab and fuselage. Any problems in your case?

Only once did a rock hit my horizontal and dent it, that is is maybe after 300 landings on gravel bars.
It was during last summer, gravel bars were too loose and soft actually , even got stuck a couple at the time of turning around for take off, was almost like sand.
Its better when they are wet or not as dry and packed.

Re: Mountain flying and gravel bar.

Yes, the rudder turn allowed continued acceleration in ground effect. That saved kinetic energy allowed a much safer climb out. Very good job.

Tricycle gear airplanes tend to suffer less damage to horizontal surfaces than tailwheel airplanes, simply because the horizontal is significantly higher from the surface when the worst rock throwing occurs.

True, but we also have another wheel throwing rocks at the bottom of our planes.

True, I can only offer my observations from operating 185s and 206s both from unimproved sites.

A friend maintained some Beech 1900s, and their composite props were being damaged by rocks thrown off the nosewheels during takeoffs from gravel strips. They did an experiment and turned off the "power steering" during takeoffs, and the prop damage went down dramatically.... I was impressed that nosewheel steering would throw rocks that far to the sides.....

Re: Mountain flying and gravel bar.

Same gravel bar, different day. Isn't it great how well our wings, engines and props work while the air is still cold here? I just wish we had more flyable days while the temperatures were still low. Sigh.

Larry I like the work you go to, to get the different angles and air to air.

Very enjoyable video, as always. Love the rudder turn on the climb out.
