Mow it "n" Land

Ever since I got the Husky project flying (12 months ago), I have had my eye on this field as a potential landing spot (a property that I manage). I really could only see one place where I could land because of the trees and power lines around the field and the one really open side has a neighbor that would probably shoot if I flew over their property. So I mowed the one angle that I could see and it measured out at 700 feet, I would be okay with less but because it is a one way, it's nice to have a extra. The other interesting aspect is that it is in class D airspace.

Awesome! You'd probably have better options if you had it a little shorter but mowed it about 20* to the right (taking off). This would keep you over the open grass airstrips and not the house/barn! Might keep people from bitching too! I only wish I could have land to do that. Dreams!

Very good apparent brisk walk rate of closure approach, which was easy to see with that camera angle. If you pitch the camera up just a bit, I think we could still see that and see the target sooner. Good to hear from you and get video.

That's great stuff! We've got one in Class Charley you will have to check out. We didn't mow it. But spent a few weekends picking rocks to make it happen. First landing this weekend.

Good luck with the NIMBYs surrounding KSTS.

The years I flew for Sonoma County Sheriff's Dept it was a constant battle with the complaints about airplane or helicopter noise.

The one neighbor with the large solar array on the roof, on short final, may be a greenie freak of some kind, watch out for them! I hate it when people think that just because I drive a Prius and am into solar, they make assumptions about my political leanings or other "life style" choices." Some are surprised when they find out I contribute to global warming as much and as often as possible by flying every chance I get :D That strip looks great otherwise, well done.

Hello Jim, I really got a lot out of that one flight with you and would love to find the opportunity to fly with you again!

Shannon, keep me posted on your flying weekends and I'll come over the hill. Will I see you at Red Hills?

Gump, yes, you know this neighborhood well. I just made the two landings and will not be making this a regular occurrence because I know it would create a storm with the NIMBYs. Also in the future my approach will not be over the houses, I will make a tight final inside the residential neighborhood. That one house on final loves aviation and was thrilled to have me landing over their barn (and I promised to give him a ride out of there one day).

Just a little wiggle makes a world of difference. I taught my Ag students to avoid the lady hanging clothes to be able to say, "he came right over the top."

Also, consider a couple turns of the prop control right after lift off and before reaching the boundary of the property to take a bit of noise out of the equation, a hundred RPM or two sure goes a long way with that 2 blade MT you have. May help with the NIMBY situtation. Just a suggestion.....

Looks like fun!

Very cool. Hope the surrounding houses don't complain too much.

That, and making steep approaches at idle power. The less noise, the fewer complaints, theoretically.

Unless, of course, there's someone like Kimberly Gibbs in the vicinity. https://backcountrypilot.org/forum/citi ... ving-17200

Great suggestion, I did learn (from feedback at another noise sensitive place) that one solid twist of the wrist takes it from 2700 to 2600 and makes a big difference.

Re: Mow it "n" Land

A guy I know had a backyard airstrip where he kept his Supercub.
Not that a SC is all that loud, at least compared to a long-bladed Skywagon,
but he had his own neighbor-friendly program going on:
he offered to take all his neighbors' kids & grandkids for airplane rides.
That way, when he took off, instead of "there goes that noisy rich asshole again",
it was "there goes that nice guy who took little Johnnny for an airplane ride".
This won't work with true blue anti-airplane neighbors, but it does wonders with normal people.

Re: Mow it "n" Land

My rural area has had an influx of a dozen or so high dollar homes over the last 10 years, all, thank God, a mile or so down the road from my "compound." But we all have the same mail box area, all grouped together. It's used to be nice and tidy, and then gradually turned into a cluster of the new people's boxes at various angles and setbacks, the worst offenders making it impossible for the mail lady to drive up/reach out like she should be able to. Not to mention the county plow could no longer clean out underneath, It was driving me crazy, a big PITA for no reason, caused by these clueless new people with more money then common sense

I got together with my postmaster and he was all for a major re-do, so out they all came. No notice was given, I just took them all down one day, with the local postmaster behind you, you don't screw around! Then I set some pipe in concrete, offset to allow the plow to get under, and remounted all the boxes in a perfectly straight line, leaving space for MORE new people, who would otherwise screw it all up again. Point being, in the process of doing this, I had several brief interactions with these people, and once they figured out I was doing this not as a post office employee sub contractor but just as a local and a nice guy  I always made a point to mention I was the guy they MAY have noticed flying from time to time in the 'hood. This cost me out of pocket nearly $200.00, and about 12 hours of labor. There was rock in the ground, I provided the pipe and welding, and it all sits on pressure treated lumber, it's first rate all the way, and over 20 boxes. 2 days later they were all back up, and the postmaster had put a little note in each box "By the way, your neighbor down the road, through the goodness of his heart (and disgust with your mechanical and construction incompetence, no he didn't mention that....) provided his labor and material to get this done, how making a small contribution to help recompense him?

For the next week or two the money came pouring in! I think I actually made out pretty good on the deal financially, BUT most important I left a good taste in their mouth about the guy down the road with the airplane, whatever it takes. Plus I don't get pissed off everytime I pull up to my mailbox now.

Good job courierguy. The way to tell how effective your leadership is : look back over your shoulder to see if anyone is back there. Adversarial pushing from behind is not as effective.
