Re: new shoes

Dang, 10 feet !?!? Flying a 140, I measure my takeoffs in lengths of football fields!

I didn't want to make it sound excessive, but that height and the resultant AOA does have a measurable
result, kind of a freebie that comes with the tire purchase no one seems to discuss (better than the hotsause as
it's the gift that keeps giving) :P It adds a ton of fun but you get scared of taxiing so you find yourself avoiding every
paved runway cause your brain keeps saying "ohh damn there goes another $10 landing "fee'" at every paved touchdown. :?

Re: new shoes

these 29's look like giant versions of my 800's with the tread grooves and they are shaved.. needless to say I will be on my toes more than ever for a while.. I'll start with a few high speed taxi's lifting and lowering the tail before I leave the ground... Talked to Burson on the phone the other day and he says it doesn''t take long to get used to them and after a while you won't want to go back but I still have my 800's if I want to just use the 29's when I go to Idaho and the desert.. anyway by the time Caveman rolls around I should have a couple hundred, maybe, landings under my belt.. but then I already have noticed the extension has begun.. :^o #-o

Luckily my home airport has a "soft" infield between the runway and taxiway, Ill use that whenever I can to save the "landing fees" Nobody cares where you land on the airport around here...

Thanks Rob! Looking forward to the "west circuit" soon. Just got the prop back tonight (notice the lack therof in the second pic), however a new problem...the overhaul guy put the wrong skytec starter on...went to fire it up for a ground run, and immediately noticed the starter was turning the engine backwards  Turns out the one he installed was for a Continental GO-300 (geared motor) #-o #-o #-o

Iceman, be sure to include some before and after pics!! I love the Maule M-4's and can't wait to see one with 29's!! :D

crazedpilot wrote: I gained 3.5" (of height, no exension jokes here) at the axles over my 800's, you'll feel that change in angle of attack once you get air in those ABW's, even at only 5psi of inflation. I think it gets me airborne 10ft sooner with that increased angle - never thought it would be one of the benefits but it makes a big diff....

Another mod to consider is shortening the tailspring. I did this on my airplane & gained a little AOA. On a Cessna you can shorten the main leaf only, & mount the tailwheel through a doubled leaf ala Piper. My C150/150TD was already configured like this, I just shortened both leafs. Logic sez that the double spring working would be tough shear-wise on the t/w mounting bolt, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

Re: new shoes

well got the damn things on today.... hardest part was getting the pads back on as the brakes are partially inside the wheel now..and holding the pads on the back side of the rotor while trying to start the bolt is a bitch... did a couple fast taxi's and drove around for a while trying rudders and burning paint off the rotors... didn't fly cause I had a couple beers while I put them on... didn't notice anything outrageously different except it requires way more speed and lots of brake pressure to get the tail off the ground now... and that's a good thing cause with the 800's it didn't take much to raise the tail with brakes...next thing is flying and finding out just how much speed loss I'm gonna have.. but they look absolutely bitchin, to use an old term....Raised the prop 5 inches more off the ground but I can still see over the nose with a little bit of stretching or maybe a thicker pillow..... prop now sits at 25 inches as opposed to 19 and a half with the 800's... :D

Re: new shoes

Being based at an asphault runway, I swap my Bushwheels with 800s frequently, and agree getting the bolts aligned is a bitch. It helps some to use a punch or Phillips screwdriver to get the holes aligned before inserting the first bolt.

One thing to check is clearance between the pad holders and the tire near the 6:00 position. After several landings I noticed rubbing due to sidewall flexure under load, so had to grind off the offending part of the lower pad holders. Then I marked the abraded part of the tire with a silver sharpie so any further rubbing would be evident, and found out a bit more needed to be ground off.

Re: new shoes

This might help with the brakes?
Long time ago I built a tool to help hold the pad and start the bolt.
Take a screw driver big enough to run a die on it to cut the correct thread for the pad bolt, turn the point down so you have a fairly blunt awl in front of your threaded part.
The cut the shaft a little smaller back to the handle or about 6 inches.
You then can push the pad up and harpoon it, then start the thread and hold it where you want it, while you start your other bolt.
Makes it way easy!

Re: new shoes

I had double-puck clevelands on my old C170, and they were a PITA to get the bolts started even with 800's. I have single-pucks on my C150TD, and it's a snap even with 850's. With BW's... maybe not so much.

Awesome Dave! Amazing what tires do functionally, but also how they make it look like a different plane. It does look like a badass outlaw!

iceman wrote:yeah I try not to think about the cost...hopefully nothing will come up that I need my money to fix for a while...am wondering what to expect in how these things feel differently than my 800's.. are they more squirely requiring even more dilligence on the rudder or are they more forgiving.. would appreciate input from any of you guys who've gone to them from regular tires.... :?:

I put 26's on my S7 recently, had 800's before that and I think it is definitely more forgiving, softer, way more fun! I may not know what I'm talking about since I only had the plane a few weeks when I put them on, but I'm loving them so I guess thats what counts.
