NW UT Hard Pan and Sun Tunnels

A few weeks ago I lent Allen my bike and to get it back, we decided to meet up and do some exploring in the NW Utah desert. So yesterday, we rendezvoused at a piece of hard pan to transfer the bike just in case we couldn't land at the Sun Tunnels. After getting a few pics, we headed for the Sun Tunnels. On the way, we checked out the site of an old railroad town. It looks landable, but the road is pretty narrow and we decided to not try it with the stiff crosswind we had.

At the Sun Tunnels, after a couple of passes, the approach road looked landable and ended up being smooth and nice with the exception of a cookie that an ATV had left. Had I landed 20 ft over, it all would have been smooth. At the tunnels we took some pics and explored the tunnels. Kind of a cool place to visit. It made for some good pics too. Allen got a lot and I'll let him add some of his pics. It was a great time to spend a Saturday morning, even if it was a little cooler and windy than it was supposed to be!

Here are some of my pics and a video.

Landings at the hard pan. The kids were excited to see Allen and Noreen.

Kind of artsy, fartsy, but some history on the Sun Tunnels.

Great pictures.

Love to see kids involved in airplanes and aviation. I think it is a great family activity. Kudos and good on you!

Being a Canadian Nerd and not having any deserts close by to frequent... Enjoyed the artsy artsy video.

Re: NW UT Hard Pan and Sun Tunnels

Sorry this took so long to post, it's been a crazy busy week! We had a blast with Cory and Dee and their kids exploring the Northwest deserts of Utah. We'd never been to the Sun Tunnels before, and they're so far out there that there was no way we were going to drive out there! Great spot for a campout, and the Grouse Creek hardpan would make a great location for a Medium Wasatch Fly-in (kind of like the High Seirra Fly-in, but not as high, and probably not as much expolosives). Here are a few shots from the trip, I'll put a video up as soon as I can put one together.

Parked at the Grouse Creek Hardpan. On takeoff I hit the only rock in the entire place - now that is accuracy! (it was small, nbd)
