How about the 220 hp Polish conversion? That would be a real hot rod…. But stuck with running 100LL. It’s unfortunate there’s not a source for new Franklins.

I'm an optimist, the last time fuel prices soared, the average airplane owner nearly ceased flying in my part of the country. Airports became almost ghoast towns except for the affluent, who's pocket book is much larger than most. Airplane prices plummeted to almost giveaway prices and actually some planes you couldn't give away!! Lot of planes in the hangars didn't see daylight for a long time.

Me? I'm not affluent but will continue to fly just like I did the last time. I rode out the storm per se. Just a few less hours flown, but I stuck it out and happy I did.

Hopefully the high fuel prices will come down and we can all continue enjoying what we love doing....burning holes in the sky!
Mogas is still expensive, but cheaper than 100LL. If you fly often and not in the flight levels that’s the way to go.

E10 seems to be fine for experimental.

The price for my local source of 87 octane E-zero mogas has gone up about a buck in the last 2 months,
but it's still close to 2 bucks cheaper than buying 100LL at my airport.
And no lead fouling.

I just bought a couple hundred gallons of 100LL for $4.13/gallon. I'd have gotten more if I had more barrels. I try to keep around 200-300 gallons on my strip. 91 non-oxy is $4.59/gallon meaning I got 100LL cheaper than 91 non-oxy. That doesn't happen often!!

I really like the Franklin personally. I'd do the conversion on my 172 in a heartbeat. It's a fiar bit cheaper then the others and the parts/overhaul availability has really improved.

Something else to consider is part availability, and the future of those parts. Lycomings arent going anywhere, what about the 300? I remember years ago my father had a 172 with a 300, and had an oil pan problem and 20+ years ago they weren't making new ones. I dont assume that has gotten any better. You can get new lycoming parts for everything. Heck you could get a factory new engine too. Something to consider. Plus resale will be higher with a lycoming.
