Oratex for skinning seat frame

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Re: Oratex for skinning seat frame

When I ordered my seats from Airtex I comment to Dodd Stretch the owner that I was removing the springs and going to use ceconite on the seat bases. He said to use the seat support material that they sell for that purpose. Still made from polyester but much heaver, higher strength fabric that you attach with contact adhesive. I haven't installed it yet but it is the same as what Cessna used on later model seat frames.

Okay Mike, you win! ;) If you've never had an issue with the Stits or any polyfiber type pan, I'll go ahead and use it. I'm thinking it might be easier to put on then cutting and drilling aluminum. Like they say...ounces are pounds. Every little bit helps.

bat443, Did you have to call them to order the material? I couldn't find it on their site.

More like your big butt getting pushed through the Playdough Fun Factory™. Though you would probable save your spine at the expense of your pelvis and butt meat.

Here's my seats I did in .025 6061:

I did the front seat in my cub with .020 2024 and did not paint it. The dampness of our location started corrosion in short order between the seat cushion side and the up aluminum side on the base. I went back and sanded, primed and painted it for what it is worth.

WW, it is in the online catalog under miscellaneous about 3/4 of the way down. Dodd shipped it with my seat order, it cost extra, above and beyond the cost of the seats. I didn't know they sold it until it came up during the discussion on the seats.

Curious if you figure this is stronger than just a solid aluminum panel, lighter, more cush for your tush, or just what?
Certainly seems like more work than a solid panel or fabric.

I’ve seen this tape in use on big airplanes. It is very strong.

Perhaps this is another option for seat webbing?

Re: Oratex for skinning seat frame

It is used on airliner cargo compartments, to seal up the rough edges where the fiberglass/plastic panels meet up.

Re: Oratex for skinning seat frame

I am just finishing reupholstering all 7 of my seats with airtex and used their seat sling material. It is really heavy duty stuff and their adhesive is really strong (both in smell and adhesive qualities). I wore a respirator when working with it. Really happy with the airtex stuff so far.
