Re: Orientation ? of a different Nature

Good observation and an unfortunate circumstance. It would be great to have more female participation here. I would certainly welcome and encourage it. May be we should ask some that we know to get their feed back?

My guess is they don't like the heat in this kitchen. Not saying they can't take it. Women are wired different than guys. They might all be over at Women Love Taildraggers site or the 99ers.

Cheers

I wondered how long it would be before you chimed in on this Rob  . I seem to remember some earlier posts suggesting your affection for the LLTD fraternity?. I'm sure they are are impassioned with the warm and cuddly reception they were afforded here #-o . Personally, I'd really like to have them aboard and truly enjoy their friendship and contributions. It would be a much more rounded site with more female participation that is for sure :D .

Re: Orientation ? of a different Nature

I was just talking about this with another member a few days ago. I think it would be great to have some ladies to weigh in on our discussions. There may be women posting on here.

I am actually speculating that this "OregonMaule" character might be a woman posing as a man

Re: Orientation ? of a different Nature

I'll take a more statistical view here. A quick search shows in 2010 the number of female pilots in the US was a bit over 5%. I think we all realize that this type of flying is a small (albeit growing) sub category of flying. I just think it comes down to a numbers game. Just not a lot of Wendys out there doing this kind of flying. Just my guess.

What ever happened to Dot in Alaska? I remember she moved down here to the lower 48 and haven't heard much from her since. I always like her replies and perspective.

Re: Orientation ? of a different Nature

I think Dot must be more involved in her new life-style than she expected. She used to post extensively on Studentpilot.com, too, and her posts were valuable to the largely student participants on that forum, but she's hardly ever on it any more. I had her web address for her blog, which was fascinating reading, but I can't seem to locate it now.

But it is a fact that women are a very small percentage of all pilots, and backcountry flying is a small percentage of all flying, so it's no wonder that there are few women participants here (OregonMaule notwithstanding :)).

rw2 rw2 rw2, you are a gifted writer I will give you that. All I can really say is we will never agree!!!!

I read the "I have a theory" blog article. Very well articulated. But as you know, in aviation most of us have brains wired different than you. You may just be further evolved than most pilots.

Instead of trying to fix us backward pilots, I suggest you go home to Chicago and fix the murder capitol of the United States. It should be easy. JUST LOOK FOR THE GUY WITH THE TEXAS ACCENT. IT IS HIS FAULT!

Good day :D

Before you go and start a crisis, consider that perhaps woman pilots don't like men.
Pretty simple really... It's their fault.

Orientation ? of a different Nature

In our defense, we drive away a lot of men too. :)

I think the forum business appeals to certain people and not as much to others. The percentage of people who want to bullshit with other backcountry pilots on the Internet is low already, so take the small percentage of pilots that are female and further reduce the number.

You have 2 angles: Attracting users and retaining users. We have a lot of people sign up who post once or twice, are active for a month or 2, then disappear. We also have people who've been consistently active since 2004. What that tells me is that some people just like the Internet stuff and some don't. Some people like the BCP vibe and some don't. We probably lose more people to personality conflict with me than we do to sexism.

If you've met a few of us in person, it becomes a lot more fun. And finally, if you're neurotic enough to agonize and obsess over the fine details and semantics of... Oh wait I'm about to tank my argument.

Re: Orientation ? of a different Nature

rw2 I read your blog. I wish I could convey a thought in writing half as well as you can.

I wonder though, to what end do you reprint the words of those morons who made those idiotic comments? Isn't it bad enough for Googlebots to be out there indexing that crap in one place instead of 2?

One can scan around and find comments from talking heads on cable channels from both sides of any discussion that are none to civil. Stephanie Miller is no different than Rush Limbaugh or Bill O'Reilly. It's all about the $$$ and perception of power. I have had the occasion to host high powered affiliates from both sides. They are all the same. Sometimes they even travel together.

More to the point though, women make the best pilots. No ego. Hopefully more will heed the calling.

Re: Orientation ? of a different Nature

I used to compete in aerobatics and I had my ass handed to me on a regular bases by a gal named Christy. I flew a Pitts and she flew a Sukhoi with the big MP-14 radial engine. I tried to make the case that the clean lines of her monoplane allowed the judges to award 10's for a maneuver that might be downgraded to a 9 in a biplane because there was always some visual uncertainty about the precision of a maneuver. The biplane just looks like a blob from a distance, and all of our competitive work was done at higher altitudes than airshow pilots work at. The truth is that she was a better pilot.

I also dated a female pilot for a while that had a hard time landing a 172 smoothly in a 10 knot headwind that was blowing right down the runway. Some folks have the skill sets and the interests to become really proficient pilots and some don't. Gender doesn't determine success or failure in that regard.

There are a variety of reasons why there aren't as many female pilots as male pilots, but I certainly have seen more women in the cockpits of commercial planes I'm boarding now than I did 30 years ago. I know the overall numbers of pilots are declining, and most of the older crop are certainly males, but I wonder what the statistics are on new pilots going through training? I know women have been an increasing proportion of many job sectors, including my chosen field of engineering. In my undergraduate engineering classes there were no female students, so I had to go elsewhere to find dates. That isn't the case anymore.

As far as this forum goes, - it has the character of the current participants. I'm here because I like what I get out of the group for now. We'll drift away over time as we age and stop flying. The character of the site will change as new blood comes in and none of us can predict what those changes will be like. Heck, 15 years from now the big focus might be dutch oven recipes for backcountry cooking after you've landed your electric quadrocopter on autopilot at Johnson Creek...
