PA-12 Suspended Upside Down From Powerline

Woke up this morning and read about an accident which happened in Minnesota yesterday. Haven't been able to find out too much information other than that he flew into the powerline, suspending the plane upside down. They cut the power to the line and were able to get the pilot down uninjured. Looks like they were able to get the plane down without dropping it too. Glad the pilot is okay, sure is another one of those things we all need to be aware of when flying low. Wonder if he was trying to land in a nearby field. Anyways, I admire the strength of that powerline though.. work of art.

Power line hangin' seems to happen every few years. I've seen a hand full of similar events since the internet was invented by Al Gore 20+ years ago.

Wow! I’ve seen them hanging from wires before, but I’ve never seen one hanging on by one toe like that!

Caught the third wire!

Wonder if it’s still up there. Would be interesting to see in person.

I've hit them perpendicular and always cut through (prop and wire cutters on windscreen and gear and cable from cabin to vertical stabilizer). He had to be parallel. That cable holding onto his gear is too big to cut.

Techniques: attack parallel, apparent brisk walk rate of closure to just past the nearer pole, rudder turn to line up with the lower cable.

This was a friend of mine.
"Highwire Mike" Warren got a lot of mileage out of that incident--
lots of BS'ing at fly-ins, and not a few free drinks.
Unfortunately he was killed in the crash of a Yak 52 a few years later.
BTW a friend of mine is a DPE, Mike's son Jason recently successfully took his PP checkride with her.

Is it best to "land" on one axel just inside the wheel/gear leg joint near a tower or in the middle between towers?

I don't know, but there is an interesting question on the Annual NOE Written Test.

In a high threat environment,

1. Fly over wires between the poles.
2. Fly over the wires at a pole.
3. Fly under the wires between the poles.
4. Fly under the wires at a pole.

Flying UNDER the wires AT the pole ... and the tolerances would be...? "Narrow"

Re: PA-12 Suspended Upside Down From Powerline

Same thing happened to a guy just up the road from me earlier this year. This grass strip has high voltage lines on one end perpendicular to the runway. This guy was lucky. His Bearhawk, not so lucky.

That's the guy that designed the Bearhawk line of airplanes. Looks like a broken foot/leg. Glad he's mostly ok!

His ending quote is great. "There's only three things I've ever been afraid of...electricity, heights and women....and I'm married too." =D>

The latter being the most fearful, no doubt.
