OUCH!!! That actually pisses me off that they could be THAT incompetent with such a rare bird. How many pieces is it in, 4-5 big ones?
I really hope someone takes on the task of restoring it.

Never, EVER let someone try to salvage an airplane unless they do that for a living, AND have a great reputation. That is unforgivable. They could have put bags under the wings and inflated them, raised it and got it on the beach......

Lifting a machine like that with a crane is asking for disaster.

Sad end to the PBY.

My father was one of the 9 Marines that survived the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. I heard the story many times of how if the PBY had not spotted them after being in the water for 4 days, most of the remaining survivors would have perished. One of the most moving things I have ever witnessed, was at an Indianapolis survivor's reunion ceremony dedicating a memorial in Indianapolis Indiana, by that time most of the few remaining survivors were in their 80's, a lone PYB flew over, tears were in everyone's eyes.

I have MES time logged in my book and a few other things from that same PBY. I am sure most of you in the Northwest have seen it around. Old Tanker 85 out of Deer Park WA. Last few years in Arlington. What can you say Someone just Fucked up a great airplane with lots of history what a waste!

Tanker 85 landed on the Columbia river at the Tri Cities, WA. I think it was in the mid 1980s. He was working a fire down river. Just before dark he was going for fuel before returning to Deer Park. The wheels wouldn't come down so the pilot made his first ever night water landing near the blue bridge. I listened to it all unfold on my scanner.

I can't remember exactly but I think he was going to fuel up in The Dalles. That's when he discovered the wheels wouldn't come down. It was dark by then and fuel was getting low. He was talking with ATC about needing a place to land on water where there were some lights and that he had never made a night water landing before. They decided the Tri Cities was the best option. When he got to the Tri cities ATC talked him through an approach over the Blue Bridge to a clear section on the river. I think they had someone with communications go out there on the river or on the shore making sure the area was clear.
