Phillips tombstone

Low flying back from a recent breakfast flight, I spotted something in a remote area, miles from any ranches or other structures, that made me curious enough to land and check it out. This marshy area was OK, thanks to the 8 degrees temps the night before, I still ran the tires over it hard before committing though. With the skis off and the Airstreaks back on, I'm not wasting any time putting them to use.Image

As I got closer, the more I was convinced it was a headstone/tombstone of some kind, it wouldn't have been the first time I had found one.Image

Sure enough, it was, for somebody name PHILLIPS #-o Image

I actually didn't ID it as a modern TV set until quite close to it, the plugins on the back were the first tip off. How the hell it ended up clear out there, I don't know. Another point of interest, in that last picture, see that hole in the hillside in the background? This area has a lot of active and inactive mines, and when I popped over that ridge and overflew that pit, that was my first thought. The fact it had water in the bottom was also not unexpected. But then something struck me and I circled back: there was NO overburden piled up alongside, and the "excavation" was perfectly sheer and vertical and at least 50' deep maybe 75', AND there was a stream coming out the bottom of the ridge line! That's when I realized I was looking at a sinkhole.....I wonder what has wandered in that thing, no way out I can see. When I get real bored I plan to go back there, rappel down with some scuba gear, and see if I can swim out into the clear. Just kidding.

Re: Phillips tombstone

In the backpacking magazines stuff like this is referred to as a "UFO' or unexplained found object.
