Bigrena, how did you strip the interior of the 170? It looks amazingly cool, by the way.

Forgive the rude question, but how well priced was that Aeroflooring DOT stuff? I can't seem to find a list price on their website - but it looks like exactly the material I'd like to use in my kitset plane. I guess if you have to ask...

I will have to look (dont really remember) but I dont think it was that bad. Maybe $250 or something? Came with a burn cert so it was worth it. (and light!)

A couple of shots of the interior of the C170 midway and just before etch prime... The plan for the C180 will be to do the same, only a bit more emphatically... The hardest part was the damn glue.

It's a pretty simple system, but my preference would still be either the Atlee Dodge or BAS (or whoever sells them now) folding seats. Many, MANY times it's nice to have ONE rear seat, and space forward for heavy stuff.

I have the Atlee Dodge rear seats in my C180H. I usually only have one installed because it is rare that I have flown with four people in the plane. They fold up against the side of the plane, but I prefer having the extra cargo space and reduced weight of just leaving it out.

The seat is so comfy my grand daughter easily falls asleep in it.

I want to strip out the interior of our 170b and do a utility-type finish as well, I really like what you did on yours. On the Selkirk insulation, did you like the 1/4" stuff? We fly all winter here and it gets pretty cold (Utah cold, not Alaska cold) and I'm wondering if the 1/2" would be better. The 1/4" stuff is probably better that what we have back there now, though. Do you remember the weight difference?

Re: New C180H - The Madness Begins...

What kind of etch primer did you use on the 170 and were you totally happy with it? I used some PTI etch primer from Spruce on the interior of the 206 but wasn't super happy with it. The top coat seemed easy to scratch. I've been debating a full acid wash/alodine for the interior of the 180.
Looking forward to following your 180. Keep the photos coming!

The rod tube was in the plane when I acquired it in 2005. I'll have to check the logs to see if the supplier is identified. A quick Google search turned up this... http://airmetalfab.com/sites/product/op ... _tube.html

I always carry a couple of rods and some tackle so that if I have to spend some time on a lake while waiting for the weather to improve at least I can do some fishing.

The seats in the C170 were done by my friend Ron Matta at Aviation Creations in Arizona. He is the bomb and did exactly what I was after which was a real light, retro, but modern seat. I scanned the Cessna logo from my original parts book and he embroidered it in the seat.

I started by stripping the subs of all the old steel springs, blasting them, and then powdercoating them. Ron then took them and added some nylon bladders, memory foam, and then a nice leather. I think we shaved almost 6lbs off each seat.

He is going to be doing the C180 seats as well. (Something is wrong with his website now, so dont get frustrated)

I used DuPont Variprime for an etch primer. Over that, I shot an industrial Imron. I have used this on lots of alum LandRovers and have had great luck. Of course like anything, you get what you pay for. Variprime and Imron are real expensive compared to other paints, but its worth it. Also if you dont do your prep perfectly, you will pay for it later.

This is how I will be doing the C180 also.

I used the 1/4" foam. The big reason was weight. The 1/2" is twice the weight and I thought it was overkill.

Of course bigger would be better insulation and sound deadening, but I would argue that my C170 with the 1/4" stem to stern has more sound deadening than it originally came with. Might have been a big warmer with the fiberglass and then the headliner, but that wasnt my style. Plus w/out the headliner there is plenty of room above for a helmet... :D

RE: 1/4" vs/ 1/2", I didnt want the insulation to come out farther than the aluminum. The 1/4 was just right.

RE: noise... its totally fine with N/C headsets.
