Re: New C180H - The Madness Begins...

We got the Rosens visors in today.

Also was able to swap the map lights with LED's. Basically you pull the torpedo light apart, add the LED bulb, then fab a PVC shroud for the snout. There is a good post on the International 170 board on this mod. Works really well and is damn bright.

Also got a chance to add some fire extinguishers to the seats. These are pretty light and real easy to get to in the cockpit.

Also added some "NO PUSH" stickers on the horiz and vert stabs. Gotta keep those line guys away from reefing on those surfaces...

Re: New C180H - The Madness Begins...

We started in on the Cessna Seat Stop kit this AM. If you own an applicable Cessna and haven't done this, you really should. Aside from preventing the famous "Cessna Slide," the biggest incentive of the install is that ITS FREE!

You can bring it into any shop and they will take care of it, or, like we did, just order it from Yingling, install it, send them a copy of the log book entry and they not only reimburse you for the cost, but pay your AP labor.

Man that is a sharp looking airplane, you are making me want one really bad.

I have told myself when I can I am getting a 182 to keep the insurance cost down but seeing that makes me really want a 180 or 185.

I must say I am a bit jealous.

Belive me I'd love to have one, only a couple of concerns I have though, they don't call me Big Nick for nothing, I am 6'1" 290 lbs, I spent the last 6 years working as a welder and a ship fitter, I can do dumb stuff like pick up engines and throw them in the back of trucks, You can see from the pic of me standing next to my ex:

Image

I might not fit so well in the narrow body. My friend has a 56 182, and I barely fit in it, I am not very comfortable when flying it, that has been the main issue steering me away from a 180/185, before I take the plunge I will have to find one to go sit in to be sure, haven't seen too many around Houston however.

Perhaps when I get up to Montana for Christmas I can bump into someone who has one. I know the cabin changed a bit in the early 60's so I am not entirely sure.

If you are not going to be using skis or out pioneering new strips. The 182 is good short field performer, for half the price of a 180. With 8.50x6 on the nose and 8.50x10 on the mains it makes for a very capable machine. My strip is 650' long and the 182 works well with 1/2 tanks 2 people and light on gear. A 180 is an awesome machine but don't pass up the 182 as it to will also get the job done.

Re: New C180H - The Madness Begins...

In the continuing pursuit of "all things LED," I swapped out the overhead panel light today with an LED bulb. I ordered all my LED's for the C170 from ledlight.com and have had great luck.

The panel light on the C180 has a red lens in front of the old incandescent bulb. I'm sure smarter people here know the answer, but since I wasn't sure whether to use a white or red bulb, I went ahead and just ordered both figuring I'd do an old fashion test.

Off went the lights in the hanger and tried both... The red LED was much brighter and got to stay inside the airplane.

Just too much damn fun!

Re: New C180H - The Madness Begins...

Awesome thread! Thanks for all the info and fantastic pictures and detail.

When I get working on my 182, I'm hoping I can change out most all of the lights for LED. LED is the way to go.

Re: New C180H - The Madness Begins...

Is the bulb just a replacement, no change to anything else?

I did all LED bulbs on my truck, I am really glad I did.

You are going to love them.

Re: New C180H - The Madness Begins...

Just do a search on their website for the OEM P/N. Should come up for the more standard bulbs.

Some bulbs on the C170 took some guesswork. I often had to buy 3 or 4 bulbs to get the light patterns right as it gets confusing with LEDs. An incandescent bulb projects 360 degrees where an LED is just one direction.

Re: New C180H - The Madness Begins...

I think the reason that red light is so much brighter is that a white LED is really a blue LED with a phosphorescent coating on it, the same kind used in fluorescent bulbs. The red LEDs can make red light directly, allowing them to be so much brighter. Have you considered removing the filter, now that you're using red bulbs?

One thing that drives me crazy on the 172s that I've flown is that the map light doesn't project light that far down into the cockpit. I keep having to unclip my navlog and notes from the kneeboard to read it at night, not to mention the pain involved with writing. I wonder if that's at all different in your plane.

I may remove the filter when the real restoration begins, but for now, I was just swapping the bulb.

RE: light for lower in the panel and my legs, the map light on the A pillars work great for directional light lower. They are also red LEDs.
