Re: Prop strike carnage

Hey Zane, I see that they were sure to include footage of the L13 on there.....lol. It belongs to a friend of mine. He got it last fall and just got it here to Merrill Field in Anchorage. It was impressive on the take off in that video considering how big it is.....for those that don't know what I'm talking about........the L13 is the 1946 OD green radial engined bird near the start of the video

I watch the big boys play and push myself to to learn what an airplane is capable of. It is also good to see what happens (to even the big boys) when you ride on the edge.

The original Convair (or Stinson/Consolidated-Vultee,depending on where you read about it) L-13 used a 6-cyl Franklin O-425 of 245 hp. The later Acme Centaur, sold by Longren Aircraft of Torrance CA in the 50's and/or 60's as a utility type aircraft , was a modified L-13 fitted with a 300-horse Lycoming R-680.
Don't know what the price was back in the day, but what an airplane! Very cool. One of the local warbird museums has a stock L-13 and it's pretty impressive, although I would think it's a bit under-powered with that Franklin. They like to display it with the wings folded for ground transport.

Re: Prop strike carnage

Here's some more info on the L-13, as well as photos of the actual bird that was at Valdez and which is now living at PAMR in Anchorage. Bud Davison also did a detailed writeup of his experiences flying this exact bird.
I plan on going up in it in the next week or two for a ride.

Re: Prop strike carnage

Was that a PA-11 that had the first prop strike? I am really surprised he stayed with the takeoff.

I bet you would win that bet too. The flying away afterwords got me to wondering if the prop actually touched the ground.

Re: Prop strike carnage

Brian, maybe I should return the set of brake boosters I just ordered from you last month for my Supercub (not installed yet, though). What's the deal with them? Too much brake for the weight of the plane? This has got me pretty worried...

Re: Prop strike carnage

ASW,

I have not had anyone call us up and say "Hey, these brakes are too much because I just dinged my prop!!"

We have been running our set on my Cub with 8-50 X 10 Gar Aero's and I have yet to make the nose go to far up on me by braking hard. But, like everything, when the conditions are right I am sure you could get a little "light on the tail" and give yourself a good adrenalin rush. But that can happen with stock brakes, old style boosters or a good tailwind landing for that matter. Keep in mind, our brakes put out the same braking power as the old booster style brakes being that they are both a 1" piston design. Ours are just more consistent because they are a vented type master cylinder with the reservoir and therefore they do not fade with brake pad wear or fluid seepage.

Hope this clears up your fears..... :D

Brian.

P.S.
Like everything else we sell, we have a 100% unconditional money back guarantee if not satisfied with our product. Just call us up, send it back and we will send you a check for the purchase price.

Re: Prop strike carnage

Brian, thanks for the info. I'd heard a lot of Supercub folks putting those brake boosters on, so of course I had to, also. Just had the new gascolator installed last month during the annual, and made my mechanic happy. Cargo pod and safety cables are next, along with the brake boosters. I'm running out of mods!

Re: Prop strike carnage

ASW,

They put other controls in those planes which can be used to prevent one from stuffing one's prop into the dirt... :D .

If you've ever flown an original set of J-3 Cub brakes with big tires, you will know without question why some folks would prefer just a bit more brake effectiveness.

Great brakes are just one tool in a proficient pilot's toolbox. There are times when full up elevator can be used to keep the tail from coming up in a short landing, but that is a dance best done after a LOT of gentle introduction and experience.

And, by the way, the Valdez contest is open to EVERYone, not just highly experienced super bush pilot types, so don't make too many assumptions from those performances. They sort of speak for themselves.

Re: Prop strike carnage

If you look at the elevators on the plane there was no attempt to use up elevator to save the nose dive. A shot of power and full up might have saved his butt.
