Radio Static

Need some help and don't know where to start.
Bought a Champ 7ac . It has a flightline radio in it that has alot of noise . I have to be within a couple miles of another aircraft or station to hear anything clearly. People tell me my transmission is clear.

Is there an inline noise filter or something that I can do?

Thanks

Re: Radio Static

My citabria did something similar. My mechanic made the antenna grounding plate larger, and it made a big difference. Range is a lot farther.

Re: Radio Static

May need a shielded ignition harness.
May need a new antenna cable.
I do not remember if you can put a noise filter on the mags.
Can you hook up the radio to a different plane that you know receives well?

Re: Radio Static

If your noise is static or "white noise", look for an antenna problem, loose conector, bad antenna, worn spot on the coax, etc. If it is a constant noise that changes with RPM, it's coming from your engine. Popping sounds are usually from ignition, and humming or tones are usualy generator or alternator noise. High pitched noise that vaguely resemble an ELT come from your strobes. Filters usualy work good on strobes, generator brushes are a crapshot, and not at all on bad alternator diodes. If it's ignition noise check for worn spots on a wire, loose plug caps, a bad plug, etc. Let us know what you find.

Re: Radio Static

Willie,
I had the same exact issue with my Champ (ex), My old Champ had not electrical system so I knew it was spark plug/magneto noise. The advice the others have sggested are all valid things to look at. I know there was a filter available for the mags, but it was quite 'pricey', seems like a few hundred dollars. Also check your radio (is it a handheld) for a setting that helps eliminated the static. My Icom had such a feature.
I will also state that some radios are much worse than others at picking up and amplifying this static. The Icom was terrible yet my old King KX99 was crystal cear with not a single bit of static.

Re: Radio Static

Fixed a similar problem on two 206s recently. Check those grounds and shielding...it's easy to check, and easy to fix. Changed the range from several miles to almost 40 miles at 4000' agl.

Re: Radio Static

We are pretty sure it is the antenna that is bad. Ordered a new one today. It was also the wrong type for this radio so it will be good to replace anyway and we are pretty sure it will work 90% better. Will know end of next week :D :D

Of coarse we had looked at everything else before that.... #-o ...oh well we did find some squawks in the process that we got fixed as well
