RAF needs help at the Chicken Strip

Just got this email:

Recreational Aviation Foundation

Chicken Strip needs work and we’re gettin’ it done!
Can you help Oct 15-16?

We just coordinated a date for a work party at Chicken Strip in Death Valley. This will be DRIVE-IN ONLY – not a fly-in weekend. The strip has been out of service since July and we have no idea of its condition. The National Park Service made it clear that it must first be determined to be safe before aircraft will be allowed to land.

The only access is from the north as follows:
From HWY 395 in Big Pine, go east on paved HWY 168;
Turn right/southeast on paved Death Valley Road;
Turn right/south on Waucoba dirt road;
Waucoba road will turn into Saline Valley Road;
Once in Saline Valley, turn left/east on South Warm Springs dirt road.
The airstrip will be on your left/north side about ¼ mile before you get to the palm trees and the springs.
Once off the pavement, it’s 40 miles on dirt road and it takes about four hours. It is a slow road and although 4-wheel drive is not required most of the time, 4-wheel drive is recommended.

I’m going out Friday the 14th to set up for Saturday’s work. I will be bringing a drag, shovels and rakes, please bring what you can to help. Don't forget gloves, other than the drag everything must be done by hand. What we don’t get done on Saturday I hope to finish on Sunday.

Please call or e-mail me so I know how many volunteers we will have, as I need to provide the Park Service a list.

I also apologize for the late notice, but this is our chance to get this strip back into service and we can’t allow a delay.

Thank you,
Rick Lach, California State Liaison

Re: RAF needs help at the Chicken Strip

Thread Bump.

Will any BCP'ers be there to help out?

I’d really like to help, but I’m coming out of Elko and driving isn’t an option for me due to the distance.

One thought is I could land at another strip in the area and ride in with someone via road from there. Anyone else driving in?

If there is already enough help, the effort for me to fly over to drive in probably isn’t worth it, but if there arn't enough volunteers, I’ll see if I can make it over. Is there any one driving in that I might be able to bum a ride from? I could land at any area airport.

Would love to go move dirt, but it's an 18 hour round-trip drive, and WX looks like it will make flying to Bishop impossible.

Re: RAF needs help at the Chicken Strip

The Chicken Strip is back in operation again. RAF volunteers, Joe, Joseph and Pat, worked most of Saturday Oct 15th to get the strip back into safe operation. Things went quite well thanks to the camp host Lizard Lee. So the next time you’re enjoying the springs be sure and say thinks to Lee.
