Emergency crews are heading to a reported plane crash at the Reno-Stead Airport.

The accident happened just before 4:30pm during the National Championship Air Races.

Witnesses tell our reporter Chris Ciarlo planes in the unlimited race were ascending when a P51 Mustang started to nose dive and then crashed near a spectator stand in the southeast corner.

As a result, airport personnel and military are evacuating thousands of spectators. Several emergency vehicles are currently headed to the scene.

There's no official word yet on any injuries.

Just yesterday, a pilot had to make a hard landing after his plane had engine problems and declared an emergency.

The air races are canceled for the rest of today.

Rare Bear is a Bearcat so if it was a P-51 not the Bear.

Re: Rare Bear

Pretty certain it was galloping ghost...I could be wrong but plane was all chrome and a mustang. He went into the A & B row box seats section 103-110. Lots of casulties in surrounding areas and grandstand. Will post more in a bit. It's a horrific scene.

That is my worst nightmare at Reno. I told my friends 3 years ago when I was there, if a plane ever looses it headed towards the stand it will probably be the end of the races. I hope I am wrong! Prayer for all. :(

My friends in the box seat section were about 10 boxes away from the crash...they are all OK. That's the good news, thoughts and prayers for those not so fortunate.

Re: Reno Air Race Crash Galloping Ghost

Been to the races 8 times since '85..this is the closest crash to the stands I've ever seen. I've seen several fatalities but this is the first time folks were injured on the ground. Your heart just goes down in your shoes when something like this happens and leaves you numb. A prayer for all of those involved.

They are now saying....

...12 dead. 75 injured. 25 with life threatening injuries. Have friends there. They are O.K. Coming home tomorrow. May God rest their souls and comfort the surviors and loved one.

Makes me a bit sick at my stomach.
