If it makes you feel better, we could fight over why it's better than the 9mm.

The cartridge that started World War I.

Well, at least it was good for something...

That's the spirit!
Next, I should comment about carrying a larger caliber is merely a compensation for some other inadequacy.
I wrote something down but I can't find it in my purse at the moment. Give me a minute

Recently been bitten by the .45 Colt bug. Ruger Bisley Blackhawk and M92 lever action rifle. Fun combo. Have a Ruger GP100/M92 lever gun 357 combo going too. Both very efficient rounds in terms of powder burned/performance and cast bullets. Just fun stuff though, no illusions of thwarting rabid bruins.

Not yet, I figured it would be a good idea to shoot one before I buy it. Haven’t had any luck finding one to shoot so I figure I’ll just have to buy to try. Once I get unburied from current events I’ll make the purchase. A pm will be sent your way once I do.

Lucky to have that yard! I do love bears. They're halfway between a swine and a human, which is a LOT more than I can say for many people...

Do you actually eat them? I know some do, but it doesn't seem to be real common.

Selecting appropriate caliber handgun

Black bear is quite good but diet does affect flavor.
I’ve never eaten brown bear and dont really want to however I’d imagine an interior grizzly might not be bad.
Mountain lion is very tasty.

Yep, black bear that's been up in the mountains eating berries is great, very pork like. I'm not a grizz eater.

We sure do at our house. Great eating, especially in a nice farmer sausage. It's one meat the kids can't get enough of. I'm allowed two a year and I try to pick big ones so there will be more meat.
Incidentally on the handguns for bear defense topic, if this article is to be believed it seems it doesn't maybe matter so much what you carry as that you do carry something and at least get a shot off.
https://www.ammoland.com/2018/02/defens ... y-caliber/ I know my good buddy who has dealt with a few bears says it's not that you need to instantly drop a bear in its tracks, it's that you need to convince it you aren't easy prey, hurt it enough to change its mind. For myself I've never had to shoot a bear defensively, I've always been able to scare them away with just the noise of gunfire.

Re: Selecting appropriate caliber handgun

Landing on a bush strip a month ago, a big griz ran across in front of me towards the lake where I was planning to fly-fish. I fly-fished anyway, but with the added weight of my 'plane gun. Nearby they've closed about 50 mountain biking trails because of bear activity. The indignity of the inconvenience from a lesser life form.

I never packed in Mog either, though some guys did. It was easy enough to buy whatever you wanted at the arms market in town. We'd carry a couple of armed UN regulars, Indian or Pakistani, for the routine stuff, and for the rough stuff we could count on the Australian SAS.

I'm a big proponent of firing into the air.

The air between the end of the barrel and the central nervous system of the critter I want to dispatch.

YMMV

Re: Selecting appropriate caliber handgun

I use to subscribe to the “always carry and shoot to kill” line of thinking. I’ve since adopted the “avoid” or “stop the threat” mentality and as pointed out above that usually doesn’t have to be lethal. I’ve been face to face with cougar at 20yds as well as black bear at the same distance with only a bow and neither the animals or myself seemed to experience too much angst. And, if needed, a noise parade from a firearm will hopefully do the trick of scaring most animals off. If anything I’m more fearful of people but again feel like I can either avoid a situation or prevent one with the appearance or sting of an A380. The exception might be the ED person strung out on drugs but for the most part I feel like I can recognize that from a mile away and avoid it. It feels better to not constantly live in fear too.
