Kurt just graduated from the Air Force Academy and before he had to leave for his first posting I thought it would be fun if he and I had a chance to go somewhere for a couple days. So we loaded up the Maule and off we went!

Lock Haven is bordered by a mountain on the south side and a river on the north and east sides. They were using turf runway 27 Friday morning which is a right hand pattern. I chose to come up the valley from the east and fly north past the field to get a handle on traffic volume. It was heavy! On our first downwind I had multiple bogies converging on me from both sides! I opted to bail on the pattern and go circle north for a short time till everybody got sorted out. Even then, when I got back in the pattern to try again I found myself closely following a cub on short final. He landed and immediately another cub pulled out directly ahead of me to take off!
I think I landed in his dust!
There is a varied assortment of planes to look at.

Some of them are a little weird! Over on the left hand side of the cockpit there is a small sign that says "Crashing Sucks!"

Take note of the wiskers on the nose, red eyes and black ears.

Here is a Super Cub I haven't seen before!

Of course there were only a few hundred of these.

Some guy on the airport owned a Slovakia L39. He put an impromptu show on.

The Stearmans were well represented.

A C54, with an onboard Berlin Airlift museum, was neat to walk through.

In the evening the C54 did some flyby's which was rather cool hearing those four engines pounding away!

Here is what a newly minted 2nd Lieutentant looks like after eating a lot of stuff we shouldn't and walking around most of the day in the blazing sun and heat.

It was a great day!

And the evening cooled down nicely for sleeping.

We sat under the stars and solved most of the world's problems. You all probably noticed the difference Saturday morning!
After the obligatory morning fog the next day we departed for home!
