"Rag and tube" is a pretty broad description that covers a lot of aircraft, as you can see from the posts in this thread. My new airplane is rag and tube and is just a little different from the ultralight I learned in.

I fast discovering that! Rag and tube over here really references to your bare bone basic ultralights like bear builders challenger, the quick silver, drifters ect. Having said that im loving the photos!

I just love any plane that sticks to the kiss princible! ( keep it simple stupid i case that phrase doesnt cross the pond!) so it could be any plane that lacks bells and whistles and it will fit in here nicley

Mine has been called a Weed Wacker, an Ultralight, and even a Hang Glider. When someone unfamiliar with tube and fabric construction asks "What is it made of?" I tell them "Bed Sheets and Broom Sticks".

Couldnt agree more. I have a passionate love for the cub. I just love that its been around since forever. There is nothing to it, yet it just seems works so much better gvan just about anything else!

My little challenger on skis last winter. I miss the snow. So few places to land within my range in the summer.

And a summer shot with a passenger.

great shots phil! out of interest what range do you get out of the challenger? and whats its cruise?

I went for a burn this morning in the drifter during what is our winter, it was 17 degrees c so about 62 f, and dam it was cold! I dont know how you do it up there!no wonder you got a beard!

I cruise at 60 to 65mph on wheels, 70 to 75 on skis, with about 2hrs fuel plus a 1/2hr reserve. Not too many places I can reach in Alaska without filling the passenger seat with fuel cans to get home. I'm eventually going to add a second 10gal tank to the passenger seat, with a quick connect to use as a ferry tank.

It was about 60F in the shot with a passenger. Just need a long sleeved shirt. Of course that big wide windshield on the Challenger helps a lot! Especially when it's down around 0F (-19C).

I'm a high time forum lurker, low time pilot, and first time poster. I'm 21, fresh out of college and lucky to now be in a position where avation can be a part of my life. I just wanted to get my name out and say thank you to all of the posters who share their information, it is immensely helpful to newbies like myself! But honestly I also wanted show off a champ I am going through the buying process of! She's a 46 ' 7ac with a c-85. It's about as simple as it gets and that's what I'm excited about!
