Site is up...registration is disabled

Did a lot of cleanup. Pretty heavy handed, some babies may have been thrown out with the bathwater.

Registration is closed until further notice so that existing users may enjoy the forum until I get a chance to perform the upgrades.

I was really enjoying not doing anything, but Friday was a little much. Thanks for the texts from those who notified me. For anyone who wants to bitch about it...apply for a refund.

Thanks, Zane. I'm sure I'm not the only one who refreshed the page over and over again yesterday, like a crackhead looking for a hit! [-o<

Re: Site is up...registration is disabled

Zane,
Glad the site's back up. =D> But now I'm b a c k t o g l a c i a l speed.

I couldn't hack my way into my kids' See and Say. Let alone speak Cyrillic. And I haven't said anything bad about snowboarders for months now.

Why don't you appoint some new mods to take out the trash while you're gone instead of throttling traffic and eliminating new registration?

Re: Site is up...registration is disabled

Not complaining, "It is what it is" . . . but I too am back to slower than frost heaves.

I try to put up with the slow speed like this. First, I'm much more selective on what topic I'm willing to click on, as it takes upwards of 30 seconds for anything to load. Then, and this is the "smart" part, instead of clicking on it normally, I left click and select "open in new window". I can do that for several topics and then go read emails or go to other sites while the slow-poke BCP loads the items and shows me when they are loaded by the tabs at the top of the screen (using IE). Then I can read them and delete each pane when done. Obviously sub-optimal, but it does work and it beats being frustrated or staying away from BCP.

Unfortunately, that horde of bad guys and bots that were posting spam and stuff are still outside the wall banging. They may not be posting, but they steal CPU cycles every time they connect to the server and cause it to process PHP.

In the past I've blocked huge blocks of IP addresses ad entire countries. I fear I may have to resort to blocking everyone and only allowing north America and GA friendly countries, because what's the
point of letting anyone else connect?

Needless to say, this requires a lot of work and is a very dynamic battlefield that justifies an entire job position at many companies.

Of course, there are other network related issues that can cause slowness for certain broadband providers, and I've addressed in the past how to work with me on diagnosing that.

The server load issues mentioned above also come in waves, so the site might be bogged down for a brief period then become zippy again.

And you do this out of the goodness of your heart or whatever. I'm in awe, and most grateful.
