Southwest Alaska Flying

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Re: Southwest Alaska Flying

Flew along the Branch two days ago and it is now locked up pretty good. Was not taking photos at the time. We have finally had a good consistent run of cold weather, so many of the little lakes from King Salmon to Koliganek to Iliamna Lake are frozen solid. I'm sure other parts have good ice but I haven't been inspecting beyond those boundaries much. There are some lakes around the Talarik Creeks that look a little questionable, but that is probably just my native caution.

However, the big lakes are a different story. I don't anticipate any landings on big water unless it hits and holds zero for a few weeks...just have not had the cold needed to get the heat out of those huge thermal masses...

Re: Southwest Alaska Flying

I am wheels only, too cheap to use different gear and we usually have lakes blown clear enough that wheels work. My tripe was parked at transient charlie Sunday night through Tuesday noon. Where are you on the field?

She was down for a little while, wasn't she? If so, glad to see her up again!

That landscape is beautiful in an "other worldly" way.

Troy,

Facebook did something with your pictures in this thread. Not cool.

I see that...the photos are all still there but they are no longer at the same address, apparently. That is fairly infuriating. Not sure if it is worth fixing links if they are unstable...maybe time to start a new thread and dump FB as a hosting option...

Zane mentioned this issue in a thread somewhere prior regarding someones Flickr account, I believe. Sorry that it happened! You had a pretty long run of pictures going in this one.

I guess when any of these picture hosting websites decide to move the album addresses, those using the hosting service are screwed.

Not sure what a good answer is.

I don't know either...maybe just post a new thread every time...that way the old thread just dies away in silence...

OH, you expected Zuckerman to play along? Hahahahah

Need to find a way to host photos in-server like supercub.org or shorteningpipers.org or any other flying blog. Can't be too hard.

Like this? https://www.backcountrypilot.org/me/my-photos/zzz

Attaching photos to forum posts (like those sites you mention) is inefficient and difficult to manage down the road, despite maybe being easier for some inexperienced people to comprehend the "upload a local file from your hard drive when you post a photo" concept.

Using Facebook as a reliable image host wasn't a bad decision, but no one could know they'd make those URLs obsolete. I use Flickr too, as you know Troy, and that has apparently happened with them too.

Imgur seems to be reliable and unwavering. I host many photos there too.

Re: Southwest Alaska Flying

Except when I started this thread I couldn't actually get an image to load here, and I was sharing those images in multiple places, so it made more sense to have one place for them. Facebook takes a low-quality version into upload, which saves a lot of processing time and upload bandwidth...so...now I have a pile of broken links in here.

Sigh.

Someday I am going to have decent internet.

But probably not anytime soon.
