I use this (or similar) technique a lot when I'm too high on an approach-- works much better than slipping, for me anyway. A guy I know calls this "stalling it down", so (probably like you) I assumed that's what this thread was about. Since it doesn't really include an actual stall, it's more of a mush-it-down. Like you point out, at the bottom of the descent you need to add power to reduce the descent rate at impact or else drop the nose to regain kinetic energy of pressure airspeed for a normal landing.
If you watch "Space Cowboys", you'll see Tommy Lee Jones employ this maneuver in the simulator and later in the movie Clint Eastwood does the same in the shuttle. If it's good enough for them two guys, it's good enough for me!

Re: Stall Down Approach

Ya know, here's the thing...

This site is obviously Zane's baby, and we all need to respect that, and clearly it is not an instructional site.
At the same time, it is not laugh-in, nor is it politico 101.

What I see as Zane's creation (and I may very well need to be corrected) is a place where people with a common (albeit wide) interest is off airport flying can come together to shoot the breeze. A good analogy to this would be the corner bar. I say a good analogy, because down at the corner bar, just like here, we can find timid types tucked back away in a corner, old salts who have more war stories than Patton, and loud mouths who are loud before they even touch a drop... no difference...
I like most consider BCP a resource to learn, while still serving as a form of entertainment. So the comedy stuff and fun poking surely must go hand in hand with the theory, ideas, mechanical etc...

Clearly Censorship is not what Zane is after, otherwise instead of the wise Disclaimer thread, he would just shut some of us off. This is great, because the alternative would suck...

It should also be pretty clear that the level of experience here runs the full width of flying. We have many dreamers and student pilots, fighter jocks, transporters, all the way to an astronaught...

SO given that broad of an experience level, I would hazard a guess that even if personality conflicts didn't exist  total agreement in anything is probably not remotely possible. But that's not all bad, because when we examine why there is conflict, someone ultimately has the opportunity to learn from it.

Comedy is great! Anyone who knows me, knows that as a general rule I make fun of myself far more than I poke at the combined sum of all else.
Ridicule.... not so great... Now it's one thing to have a good buddy poke fun at you. Specially if that sparring brings laughter. But that's not the same as ridicule, since there was an age requirement to get a pilot certificate, I am sure all of us are aware of what I am saying here, I think sometimes we just need to be reminded. Just like Phil needed to be reminded that even though his wings were level his AOA was not...

and shazam! there it is!
1) conflict
2) discussion
3) education and most importantly
4) fun....

To all who have children on this site, I am sorry for preaching to the choir...

To Zane, I have very purposefully kept my posts on threads like hydroplaning to a minimum. I do not want to even be a part of a discussion that has the potential to get someone killed, let alone the influence that led them there. So if you ever read one of my posts that suggested a technique that could get a reasonably minded pilot killed, please, please PM me, call me, hell cll me out on it some how. Skip the freedom of speech shit, because I really, really want to learn something from that experience...
Oh and hey, thanks for the kind words on the video. I have no idea how you found it. I only shared it with a few friends, because in these first few attempts to make a video it became painfully clear to me that I lack the artistic touch, talent, and patience to do it well. I will probably give that medium up

To Greg, I love your vids, and your flying. I have no idea how you post like you are on super LSDshroompeyote and then follow it up with a reasonable conversation, but I can see that you are thoughtfull enough to include yourself in every hallucination  this alone shows humor vs ridicule.

And lastly, if there is one thing I have learned form this internet stuff, it is that you should never, never make judgements about a person popping up on the screen before you. No different than real life, huh?
We have difficulty truly grasping a persons thoughts and emotions through this medium, so how in the world can we think we really know a persons merits or experiences by simply reading a post or two? Some of the most simple posting humble people I have later met in person have turned out to be solid gold. And a wealth of knowledge...

Nah... you know, I've spent wayyy to much time on these sites lately, but for just the few amazing people I've met thru them, I'd hate to call it a waste... Maybe it was worth sifting thru all the shit to find a gem or two....
That's it for today though, because today I have to go prebuy a Taylorcraft for the kiddo, and then work on a model Stearman for myself.... flying, not flying a computer, that's what we like to do down here

Take care, Rob

Very well put, Rob. =D>

I really like the corner bar Zane has created here. But then, I've never minded a little variety in my fellow patrons.

You are exactly the kind of adult teacher I am looking for in an Ag instructor. If you ever want to live in Misery give me a call.

Re: Stall Down Approach

55Wagon,
A Thrush is not so slick and with two holes it might go slow enough not to scare me. I'll take you up on that some day. Do you train with the Thrush or is it one of those used down south to kill weed and have door gunner cover?

I believe you may have attended the wrong class, that was actually an automotive transmission.

This is probably what you should have signed up for:

Re: Stall Down Approach

Well that finally explained the sigmoid rumblings below the belt-line that I've been experiencing. #-o
But then I'm just a pilot. =D>

That second guy just didn't sell it. In my opinion, you have to be of Wink Martindale or Alex Trebek caliber to attempt it. Part of the greatness of the Turbo Encabulator is the unwavering delivery.
