Straight Tail 172 w/ 8.50's, Airglas Fork Install Complete

Updated thread subject. Installation pictures and description to follow soon!

Does anyone have a picture of a 172 on 8.00 or 8.50's? I've read quite a bit about the low tail issue with same size tire on the nose and like to see how bad it is. I've pretty much decided I'm not going to pusue the tailwheel conversion, so I'm looking at buying the landis fork stc. Thank you

Re: Straight Tail 172 w/ 8.50's Pics

my first plane a '59 C-172. 8:50's on back, and a 7:00x6 on front. It would get me into places, I worried about getting out of. My goal from here on out was to only have planes that would take off from anywhere I could land.

not mine, but if you want to go whole hog wild, here are some 31's on back and 8:50's on the nose, and a O-360 for power.

Re: Straight Tail 172 w/ 8.50's Pics

sorry - after reading again, I see that you want all three 8:50's. My buddy has that set up on a newer 172, but didn't find pictures. His tail is real low. On my two 172's, I wore the tail eye bolts through dragging them. His would be way worst. What I was going to do, but sold them, was get a flat spring bent into a "C" with the eye bolt bolted through the top of the C and the bottom of the C below the eye bolt head as a skid plate.

I wonder if all cessna trikes are like this... My buddy's 206 on 8.50's sat like a taildragger. It leveled back out with 26" mains though.

Thank you for picture. I don't realy want to run the same size on all three but STC for Airglas for requires it. I would rather run a 7.00 on the nose but from what I read, it's hard to get the field approval for that unless you're in Alaska.

I totaly hear what you're saying about getting into places that you can't get out of. The problem is realisticly, it would cost upwards of $30k to put a lycoming on it. If I could afford it, I would have done it already. One of my thoughts, is if I spent $4K on the fork and larger tires, I would try to pursue a field approval for the 80/42 seaplane prop since I would then have the extra prop clearance.

Re: Straight Tail 172 w/ 8.50's Pics

From talking to Hitchcock Aviation, to go to the larger mains you first get the Landis STC, then there is another STC to build off of that to put 29" tires on. Not sure which all aircraft this applies to. Here is what he sent me. Someday I think this would be fun to do.

In regards to the Airglas fork, we use the Airglas STC up to 8.50x6 tires and then I use the Alaskan Bushwheel STC for 10" wheels or the Alaskan Tundra tire kit STC for the glue on adapters to make a 10" wheel to run the larger main wheels, which require the Airglas nose fork. I can sell you the entire setup once we decide what is best for your application, if you don't already have them I can sell you double puck brakes too.

Also, the 29" mains setup was featured in the CPA magazine a few months ago. I'll see if I can find a digital version of it.

Re: Straight Tail 172 w/ 8.50's Pics

Hi Fat Tire Bob,

Would you mind sending me these pics also? I have a 172K that I've been wanting to put big tires on. There is a 182 at my airport with 8.50's on all three corners, and I thought it sat pretty low in the tail. I bought an 8.00 x 6 on ebay for a good price and was thinking about going through the red tape of legally putting that on the nose and 8.50's on the mains. How much trouble was it to go about this and stay legal? I have no reason to go bigger than 8.50's on the mains, but would like to keep the attitude close to stock.

Thanks,
Bob

Re: Straight Tail 172 w/ 8.50's Pics

I have a 172 with the Airglass (landis) fork. I ended up putting a 7.00 on the nose out of concern for the same issue... If I was to do it again, I'd probably go with an 8.00 or not worry about it and put on the 8.50. I went to Thun Field (Puyallup, WA) to get the fork installed and the field approval as I was told by my mechanic that the local FSDO would not approve it. Unfortunately the IA who worked at Thun and had a relationship with the local FSDO has moved on. He did get a field approval for putting on a 7.00, 8.00, or 8.50 (it might also include 6.00. I don't recall).

Peruse my gallery.

Here's one of mine, in front, and Kelly's in back. Kelly went with 8.50's all around. Image

Don't know how to get the image to show up with the new bcp 3.0 format yet. I probably have more photo's of Kelly's setup in there somewhere.

I found the tail sits lower depending on how inflated the strut is, of course.

Re: Straight Tail 172 w/ 8.50's Pics

Wup (AK bushwheels) was really informative as well. Too bad, in a way, they sold the business. If you buy the 6 bolt wheels you should be able to put on 8.50x10's on the mains and have the 8.50 on the nose with a level clearance. You'd also need double puck brakes.

Hope this helps,

Craig
