Super Cub is too small

o.k. guys I'm 6'3" 280 lbs 58 years old and would like to get a taildragger Tandum seating. Was thinking cub or champ. Just got done getting in and out of a buddies Super Cub......my body still hurts!!! It does not bend in those places anymore!!!! Then I think about what it would be like 5 years from now....no way. Youe ever see a elephant get in and out of a telephone booth   Some of you guys are too young to know what a telephone booth is, but it aint very big.

Have not tried the champ yet, that's next. Any other plane I should be looking at?

Rans S-7S. Huge doors. wider than a cub. Plenty of leg room. 6'5" big guy fits very comfy.

Re: Super Cub is too small

You could look at the L-19 Cessna.
Call CubCrafters they can make any older Cub or a new one work.

You can get a cub with a 4'' wider fuselage, might be a little easier to get into.

My problem too. Get a Scout or L-19.

Re: Super Cub is too small

All so look at a Stinson L-5. That might work all so good load and STOL.
I owned a 108-3 SW for 10 years and loved the plane easy to fly good usable load.

Re: Super Cub is too small

I really like L19s, they are really cool but run about 50 to 100k more than a cheap super cub. Patrol Guy's Scout also seems like a really capable airplane too and cruises like crazy.

Re: Super Cub is too small

If you're a big guy and you want a tandem seat airplane do not pass go, buy a Scout.

Lots of room, good useful load, fast. What's not to like?

Do some research, however, prior to buying. They've had some QC issues over the years.

I'd stick with metal spars and the O360 with a CS prop and the big fuel tanks.

Everything else is details.

Re: Super Cub is too small

Bighorn,
I'm definitely not the size you are but other issues kept me out of Cubs also. They are small inside and rather hard to enter/exit for me also. I still covet one though. :)
As was mentioned about the RANS S-7, they have more room as does the Champ series of planes. Not sure where you are in Mn but I have a RANS S-7 and a Champ on floats you can try on for size if you are up around the Park Rapids-Bemidji area.

A Cessna 305 would make a nice bush plane if you could find one.

Re: Super Cub is too small

Pretty sure the 305 is the civilian version. The L-19/O-1 bird dog is the military version... someone correct me if I'm wrong.

The basics:

There never was a civilian version. 305 is the cessna model. L-19 & O-1 were military designations.
Ector Aircraft rebuilt some into a mountaineer & super mountaineer model. I think most were 3 seat models.
In France, Saia Marchetti rebuilt some as the SM1019 with a turbine. Also had a rear door for the Pax
