We are around next week as well. Going to Fredericksburg for T-day. I got your cell so if we are up and around Llano I send you a note.

Water lines and livestock, I hear ya. Something I had to get use to is in Freedom Springs the water lines are 10-12 inches deep, up north they are 6-8 FEET deep :)

The first year I farmed in NW Iowa there was no snow for cover and well below zero causing the water pipe for the cattle to freeze. Had to get a guy with a portable welder to hook on to each end of the pipe to thaw. If it'd been plastic, I'd have been out of luck.

That's a great idea. This is the first year we don't have at least one of our daughters in for Thanksgiving.

Airport manager doesn't much like me over there, think it's my aversion of pavement.

I imagine I'll find my way to Llano some time next week, let me know if you're headed that way and I'll do the same.

Up here in Canada our lines are all buried minimum 8'. We still have freezing where they come up at times. Most of the lines being plastic has caused us to be inventful. We built steamers. Basically a metal pipe, on a stand, with one end welded shut and the other welded shut except for a filler/blled off valve. Fill with water, heat with tiger torch, bleed steam off through 1/4" line which you feed through the frozen line. Could easily become a bomb, so managing your bleed off properly is essential.

Re: Texas Snow!

Bighorn, good deal I'll be in San Antone at my folks on wednesday/thursday but back up in Llano on Friday. Gonna head back to ranch real quick as soon as freezing rain and snow clears up Monday or Tuesday.

Unfortunately, our poly pipe water lines are on the surface as we ranch in Lava rock country and it is a feat of strength just to bury a line a foot deep across a road. Everything that is metal we double wrap in insulation and then bury above ground a couple feet deep, well heads much deeper. Usually it doesn't freeze too hard in West TX but the last four years have been brutal and I've spent months rebuilding the entire system, character building to say the least. Got it set up for hard freezes these days but I wasn't there to shut everything down and my dad didnt believe the weather man so now we are most likely screwed...

Barnstormer that is interesting, he doesn't like me very well either. 3-4 years ago I was coming in and was about 25 miles out and a front had just moved through and put a little ice on the runway so he closed it........ well where I come from if we closed the runway every time there was ice on the runway we would NOT be flying a good portion of the winter...... I did a low side step flyby checked it out and announce that we were landing at pilot's discretion.....from some reason he didn't like that too well. That's the way it goes some day.
The grass along the runway looks good but I should walk it someday next time I'm there just in case.

I give you a yell if we get up to Llano for a Cooper's fix :)

Gonna hit Hondo's in Fredericksburg on Sunday for some of that good old fashion Country Gospel music too.

Sounds like you have been in a few binds as well....farm kids got to think on the feet all the time. Sad part is there are fewer and fewer farm kids around . Most people that walk through my shop would say it's full of junk.......now take a farm kid and let them in and they begin to drool .....

Ya Bighorn, we wouldn't get very far if we couldn't think on our toes.

Re: Texas Snow!

Finally got power back after a week. Over 400 broken power poles have already been replaced in the Big Bend. We dodged a huge bullet as the snow covered everything up before the ice storm hit and the water system held together. No Thanksgiving day off for this redneck, but sure got alot to be thankful for!!!

A1, at the present rate of global warming (based on the last 3 winters down here) we will have igloos instead of adobe's in no time ;)

Re: Texas Snow!

Luke, missed you at Llano today, now I know why. Bummer. Sure glad things weren't worse.

Met another wagon driver today, Buz Landry and son, flies a 185 with wheel pants out of Georgetown. Nice guys and a fast wagon.

Also met one of the Maule club guys and his wife (she flies a Carbon Cub). They both already heard about our Texas STOL Roundup and are spreading the word. It's starting to look like the turnout going to be strong.

I went up to Peabody, Mass for a 6 week job and they acted like I was the one with the accent. LOL They laughed when I said cement and told me it's not sea mint, it's corncrete! At the end of the day I wanted a beer and I had to decipher the reply. "Let slide on over to the packy in the cah and snag some beyahs." LOL

Those pictures are awesome. I've lived in Texas most of my life and have never seen anything quite like that.

Tragically, ATXCitab (Hank Sasser) perished in a crash in August 2014. He was a great guy and will be missed. -Z
