Texas Turf with fuel (All strips)

This is my home airport located near the headwaters of Lake Travis. Privately owned by the pilots, open to the public. Some of the cheapest fuel in the area. No touch and goes or stop and goes allowed. No airport car available. No restrooms or other facilities. Free WiFi access throughout the airport. Very friendly pilots. Mechanic on the field.

The turf we land on is between taxiways, on the west side next to the hangars, at the north end of the airport. Approximately 1,500 feet long and 60 feet wide. It's kept mown and mesquite free. Local planes using it include Stearmans, Skywagons, CarbonCub, and Husky.

Disclaimer for new or inexperienced pilots: the turf indicated in the photo is not an official runway. Recommend you land pavement first, then look/walk the turf to ensure you are comfortable with the length and condition.

My favorite, local airport. Wide and long, well maintained turf runway 13-31. Some of the cheapest fuel in the area. Very friendly. Airport car. Restrooms. Rocking chairs.

One of the local pilots has worked hard to create an unofficial "airshow parking area" adjacent to 17-35 at the north end west side, 2000' long 60' wide approximately. Enter and exit at the north end.

I land the turf with my Stearman and 185. I've seen Cubs use it. It is not maintained and there are culverts at both ends.

This is one very big, unpopulated airport. In fact before you land be sure you know how to get to where you want to go cause on the ground it's hard to know where you are.

I'd taken my Stearman to Hondo before for the city's fly-in. Then one day flying back from somewhere I needed fuel in the 185 some dropped in. With so much turf all over this airport I figured something had to be land-able. The first spot I wanted was occupied by a tracker cutting grass so I chose the area outlined in the photo. Grass was semi-sparse and about 10" tall.

After I fueled I asked the only local plane/pilot I saw how to get back to 13. He said he had no idea, he always used the runway in front of the fuel dock not matter the wind.

Nice quiet little airport to stop and get fuel.

Good TexMex restaurant in Mason, Santos Taqueria. They'll come get you at the airport and bring you to lunch, 325-347-6140, and take you back when you are done. Be sure and give the driver a tip.

I've only been here once. Flew my Stearman over for their fly-in this year.

The official turf runway, 08-26, was not easy to see the day I flew in. The wind was cranking out of the south that day anyway so I opted to land right next to the paved runway, 17-35. The unofficial turf I landed on was extremely smooth.

Llano has great BBQ: Inman's, Laird's, and Cooper's. Inman's has great sliced BBQ sandwhich and sausage. Cooper's has extremely overpriced everything, but is ok. There is also some decent Tex-Mex. The only healthy option is a bakery/deli back behind the courthouse, can't remeber the name but its my favorite.

There are 3 courtesy vehicles, 2 big vans and 1 crown vic. Larry and Roy work at the FBO and can help you find whatever you need. Gas is usually the cheapest in the region.

Texas Turf with fuel - KJCT

The first time I flew here the wind was cranking out of the west. I fueled up and tried to get back to 08-26, the official turf runway which was oriented to the wind correctly. But no matter how hard I tried the 185 kept weather-vaning. I couldn't even get to the paved runway 17-35. I finally just let it spin me around and headed off cross country at a 45 degree angle to get to 08-26.

If the theme is "Texas turf with fuel" they should all be in a single thread, else readers have to go searching for the other threads and it loses cohesiveness as as topic. I've merged them for you.

Re: Texas Turf with fuel - KRYW

Called Rusty Allen or Lago Vista. Area outlined has lots of small rocks, like the size of quartz used on dirt roads and a little bigger. Also slopes a bit from West to East. Big tires no problems. Reasonably priced fuel. Airport is on top of a plateau.
