The Mighty Luscombe 8a

Well, I said I wasn't gonna take on another project but my personality got the best of me... The newest member of the fleet: A 1946 Luscome Silvaire. Here are some of the specific's:

Year: 1946
Engine: C-65 with 112 Hours
Airframe: 1,400
Wind Generator and basic instruments
14 gallons of fuel

The owner, before he passed, put a new engine on it and had the wings zinc chromated and recovered. He pickled the engine and it's been in storage since 2012. I'm going to bring bring it back to life, re-paint the stripe, polish the hell out of it, and use it as as my fair weather plane.

Re: Silvaire....

Love the idea. Would be cool to have something just to go fly. A simple tail wheel would be badass!

Re: Silvaire....

Those Luscombes are some of the prettiest planes built. And they fly as nice as they look. A 65 is a bit underpowered, but keep it light, and it should be a fun go-mobile.

We'll see how it flies at this altitude. Others have told me this one does ok!

Never going to work out there. I’ll do you a favor and come pick it up.

I’ve never seen a Luscombe with dual 430s[emoji6][emoji16]

I was thinking dual 440's, a few G5's, all carbon panel... You know, the usual!

This one should cure any desire I had to polish an airplane...

LOL! Glad you caught the humor. I miss my Luscombe tremendously and look forward to watching you bring this one into better than new condition.

Well, It started in earnest today... Started the polishing and it really needed it! I'm going to polish the whole plane and then re-paint the stripe!

Re: Silvaire....

Wow, that’s coming our great.

Short coupled controls make that plane a lot of fun to fly.

Re: Silvaire....

Years ago I tried my hand at polishing an Airstream; convinced myself it was going to stay in less than shiny condition. You really make that look easy and the result is beautiful!

Dammit Jim! Dont say that! I'm trying to convince myself to strip and polish my 206, but reason is trying to sway me to paint...

Do it dude... You have to go through this to fully appreciate a polished plane!

I've had one. The nice thing is that up in northern Alberta they stay pretty shiny with minimal work. It's just the initial polish job. Some of my paint is flaking off and it is actually pretty shiny underneath and my morbid curiosity just wants to pour stripper on the whole thing. My other half is scared that most of it will require a ton of work...
Sorry, I'm not meaning to hijack your thread. Carry on with the awesome project.

What you just said is the thread! If you've got the time and the motivation, I'd give it a shot. If you're going to paint it, you're going to have to strip it anyway, so why not give it a whirl!

True enough Jim. Parts of it will get painted, just not sure how much yet...
